Mrs Curn had a Subaru Legacy Outback 3.0R on a 55 plate. I bought it for £3k 4 years ago with 120k on the clock and it gave us 50,000 miles of trouble free motoring over the last 4 years, until I sold on eBay with a suspected head gasket issue last month for £1k. Obviously listed with a fault. I’m a strong believer in what goes around comes around.
Anyway I digress…
She absolutely loved the Subaru, but I didn’t and I have to drive it on family holidays / weekend outings / kids hobbies etc. So when the opportunity arose I bought her a VW Touareg 3.0 Tdi Altitude in September, which she didn’t like at all. I had wanted a Discovery 4 but couldn’t stretch that far financially with a major house renovation underway. So the Touareg went this weekend, which is a shame as it was a good example with a nice spec.
Anyway I now urgently need a car as hers went yesterday and she’s not happy! Her only criteria being, heated seats, four wheel drive, and automatic transmission. Budget £10.5k max.
I keep looking at
Audi A4 Avant 3.0Tdi Quattro (the late 2009 cars with the 242bhp and flappy paddles) but few and far between with poverty spec at my budget.
Audi A6 Allroad (again the 242bhp cars) see above.
There’s also the A4 with the 3.2 TFSI petrol unit. Anyone have any thoughts on these versus the 3.0TDi on an annual mileage of c12k??
I’ve also looked at the Volvo XC70 D5. My budget seems to get me a 59/10 plate with 80k ish. Again I know little about these. Any thoughts or experience of these?
She would like another Subaru for £3k, but I think we could have the same issue as the last one at that money, and selfishly when I have to use it at weekends, it really didn’t float my boat.
Anything I’m missing or should be looking at; any thoughts or things to watch out for on the cars above??
In darker moments I have considered selling my 996, adding to the budget for hers and buying a half decent Disco 4 and then a cheap 330d for my commute, but it makes me feel a bit sad!

PH's classified search has features that allow you to search based on things like £10K max, auto gearbox, 4wd and a free text search for "heated seats". Here's that search: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds?Category=us...Anyway I digress…

TBH I'd be telling her to pick her own car, I've never come out of the other side of a discussion about what car "her indoors" wants successfully, and that's over a few years and a few iterations of "her".

Buy the Subaru. If that's what she wants, you can get one for a small portion of your budget and not have to get moaned at for not listening to her/buying what she wants, just do it
You're probably right but I don't want you to be!I hate it when we go on holiday and i'm tooling around in a battered Subaru with a bike rack on the back. And it makes my legs ache on a long journey

Ah, a big influx of cash would sort it all out!!
Try the later-model Outback with the CVT. My Mrs won't get out of them now, she's had every generation and this one is by-far the best.
ETA: We have the 2.5 and it's fine, the 3.6 would be better if you can afford to fuel it.
2.5 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...
3.6 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...
ETA2: Not saying to buy either of those ones specifically, but they're examples of the breed!

The Geartronic box in the V70 / XC70 is absolutely glacial and if your wife is used to something with more oomph I wouldn't bother. The Volvo's are immensely comfortable however! Grunt Futtock said:

You had 4 years and 50k miles trouble free for 2k. Not bad for a fully specced 3.0 4WD estate, less than £50/month. I'd just get her another one, or a later model one.
Failing that, i'd look at an 08 or 09 Lexus RX400h for 10k, another car that lasts forever without ever costing you anything other than servicing/tyres etc.
