Hi folks,

Im looking to buy a new car in a few months' time and i've been focussing on the f-type as my preferred weapon of choice. The trouble is, the crafty salesman gave me a test drive in the 5l V8 version and now everything else seems bland in comparison. The 3 litre S is very nice but it doesn't have the crackle on the overrun that the V8 does. I've also looked at the 3.4 Cayman S (the 2.5litre sounds like a sobbing bumble bee imho) but im struggling to think of anything else. Any suggestions? Max budget is £45k which rules out the V8 F-type. Must be a coupe and whether it's a 2 seater or 2+2 doesn't really matter. New or 2nd hand and mileage no more than 35k. Even thought about a 4.7 Vantage but the running costs make me cry.

Cheers!

A Lotus Evora S with a larini or 2bular exhaust is a very fine thing. Fast, should handle much better than the F-type and surprisingly practical too.

Im a big, big, big fan of TVRs and really like the T350. My concern is reliability and build quality.

Lotus Evora S - yep, really like these. I wasn't a fan when they first came out but the S is a beautiful looking car. This sort of thing might be within reaching distance in a few months: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Merc - sounds amazing, goes amazing, needs a bowser full of fuel towed behind it unfortunately

It's a bit of theatre and neighbour-annoying that im looking for. That V8 crackling on the overrun gave me a car-chubby.

How about this? I personally prefer the NA.

35-40k gives you plenty of Evoras to choose from. 45 would get you a SR, including the one you linked to - they should be willing to deal.

Superb cars, criminally under-bought.

What're your thoughts on the 3.4 Cayman S? Porsche reliability, decent MPG and a tried and tested platform. The 718 was pants, it was lacking 2 cylinders and you could easily tell they'd tried to create some artificial noise.

An XKR, it'll probably sound similar to the F-type. There is a low-mileage car in the classifieds that will leave you with some change

Well, if noise is what you are after, why not a V8 Mustang? Within budget, and you can add, for example, a Roush exhaust if too civilized in standard form.

Hadn't considered the Mustang and im a little vague on the range. Is it only LHD?

An XKR is also definitely on the list, but would it be worth going for the XKR-S?

Mustang-Not any more- since 2015 you can get RHD through Ford dealers in the UK. Drawback is the 9 month waiting list for new and high price/ shortage of used ones. You will find them on the Ford UK site configurator, but range is basically 2 body styles (Coupe/convertible) and 2 engines (V8 or 4 cylinder turbo).
