Have been through the whole current crop of hot hatches trying to decide what one to by in the new year .

I started with the A45 AMG which I fell for but keep constantly reading about gearbox issues and also if I buy new ( which is likely as I'd want very specific spec) then depreciation has to be an issue .

Moved onto the Golf R which I thought drove brilliantly but the interior was a let down for a premium HH IMO . Shame as I still think it's a brilliant car .

Focus RS text drive was short and sweet but I could see myself having fun in one and not losing a while pile of cash in two years plus the 4wd will mean I can play all year round and not bin it !

The BMW 140 has a sweet engine and the drive was great plus with broker discounts I can get all I want new at about 27k so seems a real bargain .

Ok so my likely useage is 8k a year mileage with say 4 track days but wanting to use the car for some boys weekends away driving and other than that general duties .

I know the title says the Focus and BMW but I'm genuinely very torn between the 4 cars !

I'd have them all in auto bar the focus obviously .

What to chose ?

The Golf has recently been revised hasn't it? The new interior looks good from the YouTube vidoes I've seen of it...

Having driven a BMW M135i I'd find it hard to look past the 140i purely based on the engine...

RS for me as I did. It's a sharper drive and so much fun. It will also likely be the cheapest car to own.

I think this is a choice only you can make though.

A megane can be had for half the money which is quite a bargain although not really my cup of tea.

You could probably buy either and have it for a couple of months and not lose anything if you decided to switch to something else. A bit of hassle I know.

The Golf doesn't get a look in for me. Zzzzz.

All good points .

The Meganne you are right maybe shouldn't get overlooked although I've always considered them as a depreciation monster, possibly unfairly .

I'm wondering if the new golf range will include an R with the better interior , not seen any confirmation of an R model being released yet.

The RS is a compelling purchase and think you maybe right with regards the least to run financially . Not sure of at 48 I'm a little too old for a focus RS ?

Yes the BMW's engine is undoubtably the finest there although would have preferred the car with DCT and a LSD but then at 27k it's cheap for a quality car.

Funny no thumbs up yet for the a45.
A pal of mine thinks the Amg range are a bit 'chav' but I don't see it personally

The AMG range is a bit chav?

I'm more than certain that a bright blue Focus is the correct car.

I'm not saying I agree with him just that he threw that curve ball into the equation.

The interior of the Amg was stunning and the gearbox changes awesome . Different price point to the other cars , maybe for good reason

Yes another great alternative just maybe a little OTT In the looks department for me and thinking the RS will hold its value a little better perhaps ?

They are a bit extreme in looks I'll give you that but I've not seen that many type r's on the road compared to the RS so I reckon they'll hold their value more. Plus Honda reliability can't be a bad thing either.

Yup Stella point reliability in those cars is 2nd to none .
Right I'll add that to the list of possibilities :-)

Your joking right? Just look at the FRS MK2 Value's.........

They will make less MK3's than MK2's as well. My supplying dealer claimed that Ford are going to stop taking orders at around 4,500-5,000, there were 8,000 or so MK2's made.

I ordered mine in March and really thought about pulling out of the deal purely because of the cost of the M140, for me, I just couldn't get past the looks of the BMW. From every angle, to my eyes its awkward looking, especially in 3 door.

If you can live with the looks of the BMW, the engine and interior make it an absolute bargain compared to its rivals, including the RS.

They are making a lot more MK3 than they ever did Mk2.

Some dealers now have stock and the classifieds are full of MK2 and MK3. I don't understand how the values are remaining so high when there is so much supply and they aren't selling fast either. Prices have to come down soon.

You got any stats for that? As far as I can see there may even end up less mk3s than mk2s. Certainly not "a lot more".

There was 4000 MK2 for the UK market and 11500 worldwide. From what I've read there is around 6000 Mk3 for the UK and 20-25000 in total. I'll need to find the source.

Well so far on how many left we have 4k registered mk2s and 1.7k registered mk3s.

In 6 months time when they are no longer being registered we will know for sure but Ford dealers were originally saying the UK would get around 4500 mk3s.
