What would you choose and why?

My choice would be a Civic Type R Ep3, a good mix of that fizz that makes a hot hatch special and still modern enough/reliable to be used every day.

I think you'd be able to buy a couple with £5k.

I'd have an R53 Cooper S, or JCW if I could find one.....if not a Megane R26.....or an Abarth Punto

Clio 182 / Trophy.
Or you might be able to get into a leggy MK5 GTi for that money.

I really want to like the Mk5 gti but I can't help but find them somewhat dull.

I totally agree. My preconceptions of the Clios are that they are a bit fragile which puts me off.

I'd have a Focus ST over anything mentioned so far but I guess it would be a low spec high miler for £5k so maybe not.

Totally agree. I currently have a Golf R and find it quite dull. Yes it will go incredibly fast, and it does perfectly suit my needs of commuting to work and ferrying the kids around occasionally. My Mini R53 JCW was way way more fun and far more exciting to drive. Of course it was slower, but I'd still take one over my current Golf.

As stock they are quite dull, maybe dull isn't the right word. Maybe "well rounded" is better.

After all you can't have it all.

With a few choice mods you can really liven it up and they become so much more exciting, intake, exhaust, remap and some basic suspension mods really improve the feel of the car.

It may sound odd but I don't really want a very fast car. I drive 99% on twisty b roads never really going over 60. I want something with the sensation of speed, noise etc.
