I'm after a bit of advice- ordered a new family bus (disco sport) a month or so back, promised delivery by end of March. Dealer contacted me today saying it was on its way from factory and could be picked up Thursday. That's great, sooner the better, but we're pretty busy, so difficult to pick it up before the new year. I asked dealer to delay registering it 'til the new year. He's replied saying he has to register it as its being delivered Dec.
Is this a ruse to meet sales figures,? should I be pushing for registering when I want- would it make difference in value being registered '16 rather than'17? Also will pay a month road tax but only get a week.
Am I being unreasonable?
Thoughts welcome....

He willbe able to tax for a year and a week at no extra cost to you so you won't lose out on that.

There was a similar thread here recently about the RV of a 2016 car v a 2017 car and I don't think there was any argument.

It will come down to your contract - if you bought for March to go on the new 17 reg (which would be the real issue for me rather than the year) tell him to ps off. If you said ASAP or similar, suck it up or ask for your deposit back and re-order elsewhere. Wouldn't think they will struggle to sell "your" car.

Not sure how I've managed to post my question twice? Anyway, thanks for prompt replies. Not fussed about number plate it wears, and certainly prefer having now to March, just wondered on opinion about values for car registered 16 or 17. Will have a look at the thread mentioned above. Thx

OP says the origanl delivery was planned for end March so that would be a 17 plate instead of a 66 now or in January.

Or he could wait till March 2028 and have an 18 plate, you get the idea.

Being registered Dec 16 compared to Jan 17 will make a tiny difference to the residual, I think when I looked it was a couple of hundred Quidco. Nothing major.

Find myself starting to feel sorry for the dealer here. He's probably bust a gut to get the thing asap.

Feels like the OP needed to be clearer about when he wanted the car....

it will make no difference big enough for it to be a concern

A 2017 registered 66 Reg car will be worth a touch more than a 2016 registered one but the difference will be small and will obviously decrease over time.
If the dealer needs the car for his Q4 target he may well be up for offering a sweetener so ask the question and hopefully everyone comes out happy!!

You see what I did there. I meant to put 2018 but you have the theory right.

Dealers knew as soon as the government changed plate changes to every six months that someone buying a car for the next year in March will be doing so to get the new plate.
Tell them you'll collect it in March as agreed and see what happens.

Honestly, sometimes I can't believe PH. People jumping to conclusions, getting the wrong end of the stick and generally missing the point.

All sorts of folks throwing in rubbish like "tell the dealer to censored off" and "tell him you'll collect in March and see what he says" (although quite what the point of collecting, in March 2017, a 66 plate car that was registered in December 2016 would be I don't know).

Based on what we have been told so far, the OP asked for the car to be delivered asap and the dealer (for whatever reason) told him he'd sort it before the end of March. Well December is before the end of March. The dealer didn't say "in but before the end of March". No mention of which plate 66 or 17 it would be. If the OP had wanted a 17 plate he'd have ordered a car for March and there would be no issues. If the OP had wanted a 2017 (66) rather than a 2016 (66) plate he'd have asked for that too. His issue is merely whether a 2016 (66) is worth less than a 2017 (66) but that is irrelevant too given that he didn't specify an "earliest" registration point.

We don't know why the dealer needed to give himself a window till the end of March and then came up with a car in a matter of days. But that isn't the issue.

Suspect OP went in and said "get me a car and make it snappy" and the dealer did just that.

Who'd be a car dealer ? I'm not a big fan of car dealers, but sometimes you have to feel sorry for them if the "get some money out of him" amentality shown by the majority of PH'ers in this sort of scenario is representative of the population generally....

Well..........the beauty of this is that the OP can clarify for us and we will see whether mine are "jumping to conclusions" or a "pretty accurate assessment of the situation given the known facts"

What we know the OP did NOT do is:

a) ask for a car for March (17 plate delivery). Otherwise he'd be (rightly) moaning about that (and not saying it's great that it is ready "the sooner the better")
b) specify that he wanted a 2017 (66) plate. Otherwise he'd be (rightly) moaning about that (and not saying it's great that it is ready "the sooner the better")

But people on here seem somehow to be reaching those conclusions regardless of what the OP has actually said.

What the OP is saying is this "I ordered a car for delivery 'as and when' and it has come sooner than I expected and, given that I can't actually now get time to collect it till 2017 I'm wondering if I shot myself in the foot a bit when I may as well have had a 2017 registered car which might be worth a bit more come trade in time than a 2016 one"

What we do know is that the CUSTOMER does not want the car registered in December!

That should be the end of it IMO.

You as absolutely right. All he needs to do is get the dealer to unregister it and then register it again afresh in January.

I can't believe I didn't think of that ! Unless that isn't possible of course. Maybe I had that potential plan flaw in mind.....
