I am now in position to consider changing my ancient Focus for something a littler quicker and more fun. My top end budget is approx £9.5K. I was all set to get a MK5 possibly an ED30 (for no more than £7K) but I have now started to look at the MK6 as they look a bit fresher and may not date as quickly as a MK5. A couple of people who have had both say the MK6 is an improvement.

What do people think?

Totally agree about the mk6 looking more modern , personally I don't think the Mk5 has aged quite as well as Golfs normally do. If it was my money I would aim for the newer car although don't get me wrong would hardly be ashamed of a mk5!!

i think the 5 is the best looking of the golfs, the 6 and 7 are too clinical / angular for me

the 6's platform was a big upgrade over the 5 and a lot lighter and stiffer so they are supposed to be a much better drive

I just a MK7 on myself, had originally been looking at the MK5 for about a year, loads on test drives and was going to get one then the cheapish lease deal popped up of late.

If it hadn't the price between the MK6 & MK5 would of meant I'd of gone for the Mk5. Similar engine & looks better imo, front end on the MK6 just doesn't sit right with me, whereas the five is perfect! My thoughts were they should have bottomed out depreciation wise & to modernize the interior I would have got a mk6/7 head unit.

Interesting points about the mk6 being a decent upgrade. Is it right it was cheaper to produce than the mk5 for vw?

For me I feel the Edition 30 (If you could get a VG condition one) would be the buy, I can just see it holding its value slightly better. If you get a little bored, you can have almost 300bhp from a remap thumbup

But if you prefer the newer toys etc, then I can see why you would go MK6

The ED30s with less than 80K miles on them appear to command a premium. I also need a 5 door with further reduces the pool of available ones. If anyone knows of any ED30s or Mk6s coming up for sale do let me know.
