SWB Colorado v Patrol v Shogun
Discussion
Land cruiser or patrol for heavy use. We found shoguns don't stick the pace. The best of the bunch is the slightly older patrol with the 4.2 petrol or diesel or 2.8td. Fantastic thing, comfortable, will pull a house down and is very reliable. We've had 3, the current one is a white 4.2 petrol. Doesn't do massive miles but when asked to pull a proper load it does the job like nothing else.

Hmmm
I really wanted a SWB which are rare, you mentioning the 3.0 isn't great in the Patrol surprised me and on checking the 3.0 in the Colorado isn't great either.
If I've got to go full size then I'd rather have a Grand Cherokee, head says 2.7 with peak torque at 1800rpm and it'll go through floods, heart says 4.7 Overland with LPG - 255bhp, better 4WD system and a lovely noise but peak torque is much later.

The ZD30 makes decent grunt and drives well enough, it just isn't a bulletproof old truck engine like the TD42. Fuel pumps tend to wear out around 100-120k miles and IIRC its an engine out job to get at them for refurb/replacement. Diesel mechanic mate reckons the 'hand grenade' reputation for that engine came mainly from a dodgy earth on the MAF sensor resulting in overfueling, so if thats sorted out it shouldn't have a meltdown.
The Toyota 1KZ 3.0 aren't that great either as you say, less grunt than the Nissan engines and its fairly common to hear about them overheating and warping heads etc. AFAIK your Colorado is what we call the Prado, which shares the IFS front end of the Hilux Surf instead of the live axle of the full fat Landcruiser.
I guess you're in the wrong country for common SWB Patrol/Safaris (Safari is the JDM name), there are plenty down here but mostly the older pre-98 model. Great vehicles, I rate them pretty highly.
