What luxurious but sporty family friendly car? Doable?
Discussion
Any particular limitations on age?
S6 or XFR
Adding some links
XF, little over budget, nice though.

S6, under budget,

From experience (of the marques, not the models) I'd be more concerned about the Audi going wrong on me than the Jag, repairs/servicing (at main dealer) more costly with Audi too.

I think you are looking at M3, M5, Audi S4 etc.
Size wise an M3 will be fine. I had a 320d for 2 years after we had our daughter and it was no problem in terms of space and we had no issues taking enough stuff for all 3 of us away for a week including a pram, milk prep machine, steriliser and all the other tons of stuff you need for a baby.
I have a C Class Estate now which makes things a bit easier but a 'normal' 4 door saloon will be fine.

I thought of something like an older M5 but I hear the running costs are mental.
Your budget is plenty sufficient to buy, refresh and maintain an M5 in E39 flavour. They are not the cheapest to run but they certainly aren't "mental", despite what the internet know-alls might suggest. My family love travelling in ours.Assuming you want petrol then I've been looking in much the same space. My options are:
Merc C63 in saloon or estate
Audi S4 in saloon or Avant
BMW 335i in saloon or Touring
Current favourite is S4 due to blend of (relative) economy and being well specced out the box unlike the few 335is on the market currently. C63 a bit too extreme for my south east based commuting route, sadly.
I've not looked at the category above due to them not fitting in my garage.

To be fair any hatch back would work well as a family car so most hot hatches are suitable, I would pick either golf r, focus RS or BMW 135 or similar for your budget, saloons are sometimes less useful for overly large travel system prams etc. Don't expect to have the spare time to tinker/fix an older or project car. But you can make anything work really, I couldn't think of anything worse than a people carrier so fit a baby and young child into the back of a gt86.

As somebody who became a dad during ownership of a M135i (3 door) I would say it's fine for up to 12 months but after that getting the car seat/son in and out of the back became hard. A 5 door would obviously be better. But in these times of bulky rear facing car seats if either of the front seat occupants are over 5ft 5" one of them is going to feel very close to the dashboard.5 series 535d M sport 0-60 5.7secs and 46mpg
A6 biTurbo diesel 0-60 5.3secs and 44mpg
Skoda Superb 2.0TSi 0-60 5.6secs and 35mpg
VW Phaeton V10 tdi 0-60 6.9secs and 33mpg
then if you want to drop to low mpg something like AMG, M5, Jag Supercharged
may be worth looking at infiniti as well as those are pretty cheap now
porsche cayenne turbo for sub £20k
