Hello there, well the time has come to finally spend a bit of money on something to have a good time in on a Sunday morning, what can people suggest for around 1500 quid which will be a cracking drive and put a smile on my face. Thinking possibly clio 182, st170, puma, mx5! Any other ideas/ advice extremely welcome. Cheers.

Mk.3 MR2? Totally impractical, but mid-engined thrills.

Otherwise Clio 1*2, Cup preferably.

Can you get an MX5 that isn't a total rust bucket for that price?

I'd go for a Clio at that price point but do your research as they probably aren't the best at that sort of money. It's basic motoring though so you shouldn't get decimated by a massive bill providing the timing belt and water pump have been been done.

If you're flying solo rip the interior out to save a few KGs hehe

If you can wait until it warms up a bit then one of these and you'll never look at cars in the same way again hehe

BMW 325ti wow that wasn't on the radar by any stretch, not sure I'm too keen on the looks, e46 3 series coupe however does look tempting provided budget allows and also how it gets down the road.

Not too keen on the looks of the 325ti? Me neither, looks crap, but I'm enjoying the drive. One thing though...and many will think I'm full of sh!t, but I think it is probably too quick to thrash liberally.

Although it's pretty much the same performance as a Clio 182 up to a ton or B-world speeds

Clio would be the one. Loads of cheap bits about. Plenty to choose from.

Make sure it's had a recent Cambelt and dephaser pulley done, otherwise you're looking at £400-600 to have this done.

I had a 172 Cup for a while and it was a blast to drive.

Yep.

It all depends on how you enjoy driving.

Leftfield options:

Merc C320 Coupe

Toyota Celica 190bhp

MG ZS 180

Alfa 147 2.0 Twin Spark
I've got a Merc C230 Kompressor Sport Coupe, and whilst it's plenty fast enough (and RWD), I wouldn't call it a "B road car". Same goes for the Alfa 147. Having driven many examples of the breed, they are a competent steer, but not particularly "sporty" in the sense we are talking here.

The Celica and the ZS, on the other hand - both decent leftfield choices for blatting around on backroads. The MG, particularly, will be dirt cheap, too.

To be honest I'm looking more for the handling aspect rather than outright speed so I did try the 316ti which is a 1.8 engine and really enjoyed that as it seems much more easy to access the power that's available, same goes for the couple of Pumas that I've also looked at, although can't help feeling the testosterone level drop a bit, will be looking at Clio over the weekend. Mg zs just doesn't do it for me at all I'm afraid and appreciate feedback on merc.

The ST170 will be a disappointment OP.

Why not a e36 325/328?

Great memories smile

I've had more fun driving the 318is (E30 and E36) than I have in the 325ti now.
