Hi all,

Looking at buying a car from someone who is waiting for the v5 and only has the new keepers slip which means I won't be receiving a new keepers slip? Is it a bad idea since the new keepers slip doesn't have VIN number on it?

Has the process of taxing a car using the new keepers slip changed since the abolishment of tax discs? Never bought a car without V5 so any advice appreciated. The car is over 20 years old so chances of being stolen would be minimum I would imagine. Details shown on online MOT match the description of the car I.e colour, model, year.

Thanks.

I've not done this, but if the price is right, I would.
Copy of Passport and Driving License along correctly worded bill of sale would do, I reckon.

I've done it before, but it was from a dealer so I got a receipt as proof of posting. I filled out a V62 and a V5 in my name arrived fairly soon afterwards.

Depends on car, price and most importantly person selling.

Meet a nice person, at their house, in a decent area = 99% ok

Hoodie, in a pub car park = 99% trouble

Obviously the first question is why don't they have the V5

But yes I've done it several times without issue.

Including a cheap Sierra Cosworth in the 90's which I admit I had sleepless nights about.

Why don't they have it ? When did they apply for a new v5 ? It should only take 2 weeks for one to come through so it might be worth waiting ?

They bought the car from a colleague, car ran out of MOT when bought over a month ago. Current owner will put a new MOT on soon. The current owner tells me the previous owner only sent the V5 back to dvla a week ago. I believe he wants me to meet at his work place.

Car is £1k, not much but I still value my money so I thought I'll get some opinions before I take any step.

The dvla website states that it can take 6 weeks?

The "waiting on the v5 but will give full receipt" line just says wannabe trader to me. Plenty of other 1k cars out there.

Is there something wrong with buying from a wannabe trader vs private seller?

No

PHers like to think private sellers are all lovely who will tell them honestly all about the cars faults.

IME Traders, Private etc some are lovely some are utter tw@ts.

It does seem strange that so many don't buy using the yellow trade part of the V5 rather than adding an owner.

If you approach buying a car diligently then it shouldn't matter - most Trade warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on.

If I get a receipt with his address as it says on his driving license on a receipt signed by both of us noting car reg, date, amount paid would that suffice to protect me in case of something going wrong? Thanks

IT very rarely tajes 6 weeks, usually it takes 3-4 days. If requesting a new V5 from the v62 form it takes a bit longer but still less than 2 weeks.

We usually have to replace them when people send them on as part of a plate transfer.
