Replacement car thoughts
Discussion
Never really posted on here but love cars and am in a real dilemma as to what to do as the time has come to seriously think/act on replacing the main family car but the dilemma is what to go for and approach to buying. Current car is an ageing 7 seater.
Requirements are
1. Needs to seat 4 adults in reasonable comfort - 2 x 6'2" inc driver, 1 about 5'10" and 1 about 5'3" so 4 doors
2. Annual mileage approx 12k and live in a rural area but needs to be sufficiently reliable to do long journeys so bangernomics ruled out;
3. I'm a private buyer with no car or even mileage allowance;
4. Needs to be decent to drive and a comfortable place to be
5. Budget around 12k and would only be prepared to push higher up to max 20k if it was something where glacial depreciation outweighing running costs would justify spending more RS4?
6. Needs to be capable of occasionally accommodating a medium sized dog.
7. Don't particularly want an suv or another mpv or to go as big as Passat mondeo or the like
So my thoughts have been
Newish - focus, Astra, Leon, Octavia hatch or estate versions but realise depreciation will be fairly high;
Slightly older higher mileage - Audi A3 sportback or A4 avant, 3 series touring, Octavia vrs, Volvo v60, golf
Others I've thought about yeti 4x4 which falls in the slightly older higher mileage category, cayenne (I know I said not as big as a mondeo etc but it is a Porsche) which means older, lot for the money but, and a big but, have they yet bottomed out to mean running costs will be outweighed by minimal depreciation, Dacia duster new but will get hammered depreciation wise, Volvo v40 and Citroen cactus not enough room behind me if I'm driving (I really can't do what a friend does which is squeeze as far forward as he can if he needs to accommodate rear passengers), just don't like the "fat" mini derivatives.
Preferred method of buying would be cash plus loan as I like to feel I would actually own something when payments finish. I've never really considered personal lease or pcp for that reason but sort of understand why a lot of private buyers who maybe aren't as much into cars go down that road as you always get a nice shiny new car every couple of years. I'm prepared to listen to the pros and cons of pcp etc if it could get us something we'd be really pleased to have

The Dacia can do lots of depreciating in percentage terms, but won't loose as much money because they are cheaper to start with.
My vote would be petrol Avenis, Accord, Mondeo. They would be cheaper to buy late used, but might be harder to find and I would expect that certainly the Toyota and Honda to be utterly reliable. Maybe chuck in a Superb or the I40 Hyundai, It think the big saloon is, or the Kia version, but I don't think they do a petrol here.

Fully appreciate what has been said about the size of an Octavia or A4 avant with regard to mondeo, Passat etc. The reasons I've included them is vrs, they don't look/feel quite so big and her ladyship reckons we need to downsize a bit and I could probably just about get away with them size wise.
As for accord, avensis they just seem a bit dull and boring. Had thought of a civic estate and had seen one on forecourt of Honda dealer and quite liked it. Saw one on the road later and thought ugly.

If you want a decent steer as well as something that will take all four of you in comfort it's pretty hard to beat the Ford.

I'd also suggest all four of you go and sit in some of your options (a car supermarket is a good shout) & see how you're doing for space, also are those in the back still growing?
