There are a few i've noticed on here that share your particular sentiments. But, generally, this opinion seems to be the minority.OP might either hate it or love it but i always recommend it as an option if it fits the criteria to this thread or similar.
182!!
If you are mechanically minded and happy to do some work yourself I would happily recommend a 182.
I've had mine for 3 years now and it still puts a smile on my face everytime i drive it. That more than makes up for the parts i have bought for it.
Insurance is reasonable too, when i was 21 I think I paid around £650.

Had my Clio 172 Cup for nearly 7yrs, despite hillclimbing it, it has been very reliable, the only major failure was the gearbox (diff) needing a rebuild but thats not unheard of on Clios.
It is as much fun to drive as my 996 & as such gets used daily. Not sure I'd want it as my only car so as suggested previously, maybe a 182 with AC etc would be a better option for you?

ST170 is a good shout, i have one as a loan car whilst my car is being repaired and its really surprised me. I find the traction control a little intrusive, but apart from that its been doing well as a daily driver and is good fun around the twisty lanes 2001 190bhp Celica 76k FSH
