Check MOT history of private plate car

Just went to the MOT history website to check on a car I'm interested in. Car has a private plate. Website keeps telling my I need to enter the plate "in the correct format"

Anyone know a way around this apart from finding the original plate number?

It sounds like you are entering it wrongly. As in using o insted of 0 or something like that?

You've got the plate wrong.
What comes back if you check the plate on http://askmid.co.uk?
Or on http://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk?

All "private plates" are the same fairly small range of formats as normal plates issued over the years.
