Currently looking to change my car and i think my approach to buying cars is being able to get a price/deal where the car is still worth the same in 1-2 years time. I count myself lucky that I have pretty much broken even on the past 3 cars that i have owned (on avg about 2 years each), all cars are BMW's within the £8-11k range, 5 years old and done 50-75k miles.

So technically i have not lost/paid any money for car ownership for the past 6 years (other than the obvious insurance, tax, fuel etc which you would pay with any car regardless) and i think I have gotten used to this kind of approach, considering that a car is usually the 2nd or 3rd most expensive item in a household, it kind of eases alot of stress on the overall household finances.

Now i have kind of reached a plateau where i am looking for cars which are within the higher realm of the budget £17-22k and i find that within this bracket it is alot harder to find those 'bargain' cars which will keep their value in the next 1-2 years. I did go to a BMW dealer recently to see if they were clearing out any of the pre-reg F10's as the new G30 (5 series) was out this month but the only discount was in the hundreds (pounds) and not the thousands. But then you see places like broadspeed, carwow etc offering 20% discounts on new cars etc, but that i assume is based on an already inflated list price?

All in all I kinda just wanted to see if anybody had any advice when looking for such deals, I was pretty much fine with the £8-11k range cars because all those were private sales and was alot easier to negotiate etc, the price bracket that i am looking for now seems to be mainly dealers/main dealers kind of territory, which i don't have much experience in. Thanks in advance for any advice given

The bigger your budget the harder it is to not suffer some form of depreciation, also it's harder to bag a bargain as there are less private sellers at this price point I always get the highest spec car I can find as I've found this helps when selling on.
