Reading about how Diesel is now seen to be the big 'bad' fuel of the period - and having visions of every local authority / council taxing the hell out of you if you have a diesel car and the Govt getting their pound of flesh...

Have to ask myself - is it worth buying a 2nd hand Diesel car now, or will i end up with some nasty charges coming my way in the manner of increased parking permits, increased parking tickets, increased fuel taxes - and also i saw today a report on how 'smart' tech will soontrack where and how i drive the Diesel - and then charge me for pollution.

Think it will bleed me dry.

What's the thoughts of the P'heads community on this..?

thanks!

A.

The real answer is no one is sure what's going to happen so buy the car that suits your needs, I have a diesel & have no intention to move it on.

It's only going to get worse for diesel relative to petrol. no-one can say how much worse but that it'll get worse is fairly certain, so keep that in mind

You can get diesel at every petrol station in the land. It's so popular, it won't be going anywhere for a while, and punitive measures will probably come to new cars rather than ones that are already on the road.

As long as Euro 4/5/6 compliant you should be ok?

I would be equally worried about older petrol cars. Combination of new taxes on toxicity and road tax could see these become uneconomic very quickly.

Trucks aren't going to stop using diesel, so the fuel itself won't be going anywhere until someone works out how to do that job with something else; this isn't on the horizon.

I think if you live in a city, the likelihood of more taxation and T charges, as levied soon London seems more likely than it did six months ago. Manchester and Birmingham could be next, based on their air pollution figures.

Out in the sticks, there's a lot of old diesels around. We country folk don't mind the funny smells and a lot of us sit in non-Euro 6 tractors all day.

I bought a new zero VED diesel car last year, love the extra torque, and the 70 mpg.
