I've recently bought a holiday home in the IOM. It has a garage and I can fit something Focus sized in it plus 2 bikes. Question is what car should I get? I can afford about £4K tops and I plan to leave it on a trickle charger when not there. Needs to seat 4 adults and I'd love it to be fun yet reliable. Hot hatch is the obvious choice but at this price it can be a minefield. So far I have Golf 1.4 TSI in mind or an Alfa 147. Any other ideas?

How about an A4 cabriolet or an E46 convertible. You could get a 3.0, it would seat 4 and there is the chance you might get some sun. 4K would buy something reasonable

Nice idea, what's the rear leg room like?

Was also looking at some sort of hot hatch classic or maybe a Suzuki Swift sport. Practical and fun is what I'm looking for.

It's tight on both it'll depend on how tall you are, if your on the IOM then I'd say a nice Clio 200 would be a nice fit.

Or a bit leftfield:

Convertible wise steer clear of the Auto A4's the gearbox was made of chocolate also check that they'll fit length wise.

Some great suggestions, thanks. The A3 looks nice, shame it has MIL fault. Definitely like the idea of something with a big petrol engine though.

Not a bad idea but I seem to remember the back resembles a "leather coffin" and ideally I'd prefer 4 doors. One of the reasons I was looking at the 147. Seat Leon FR was another one. All the Cupras I've seen look a bit Chaved and 3 doors only I think?

Both good suggestions and the sort of thing I'd be looking for. The Meganes look especially interesting although the prices seem to vary quite a bit.

Yes but I'd like something with a bit of oooomf which leaves me with the ST. Most of which look like a child's training shoe. Lesser known models that go better than they look appeal. I like Saabs if that helps? smile

I stand corrected as I thought they were all bright orange! As a serial Focus owner, I really like these. smile
