BMW 3 series - Petrol needed
Discussion
Hi All,
Mrs Ice wants to change her 2008 C class, which has been a great car.....we have mainly been a Mercedes family for the last 10-12 years and before that were BMW fans!
Mrs Ice likes the 3 series shape from 2012 on wards and I think we will go small petrol engine this time.
I had the 328i hire car, which I believe was a 2.0T in Toronto a couple of years back and it was brilliant, quick, economical and a great place to sit.
So I have started to look at the petrol engines, unfortunately 6 cylinders is, we need to tip our hat towards some-sort of economy.....so over to you....
Looking at 2012-2014 BMW 3 series with the 4 cylinder petrol engines, what are my options?
320i
328i
What are they like to own and run?
Are they twin turbo? Single turbo?
Any help, much appreciated.....I have posted this here to get a broader picture, rather than BMW forum only.
Thanks in advance.

Not a 3 Series but we have just got rid of a 2011 120 & im extremely pleased it's gone.
The car cost us an absolute fortune in repairs, more in fact than our senior partners W12 Bentley!
Out of warranty we had to replace a Telephone module in the idrive £500+, also needed to replace all the ECU's in the boot last year at a cost of over £1400 due to a water leak, these ECU's stopped the vehicle being started & caused the keyless systems to become inoperative & BMW offered us f
kall goodwill on an fsh 1 owner car that had only covered 16k when we got rid. Our local dealer group we're pretty bad too, I'd advise checking user reviews of the dealer you plan to use unless you already know them.
Economy wasn't great, nowhere near BMW claims, late 20s mpg, mostly town & probably never to a good temperature but that is half the BMW claimed combined figure.
Not that well screwed together either imo.
I'm sure lots of people will be along to tell you they are a great drive because RWD, to me the only good reason to have one, ours also had Runflats which is an option I wouldn't want on any car in future.
Anyway. Good luck finding the car you want........... I think you will need it!

We have had a number of 428i's, one 328i and a 228i, the best i've seen on a run is 46mpg, they seem to show a long term average of just over 30 mpg.
I really like them, they are quick and reasonable on fuel and make a half decent noise given they are a 4 pot. They are single turbo. I've only driven automatics, pro nav is good but business nav is acceptable. Harmon Kardon isn't worth the extra but i would look for the loudspeaker professional system.
Split seats are an option i believe and don't get worked up about paddles. Service history should show on the idrive.
