I posted on here a few weeks back about cars and I was leaning towards a hot estate but its a tough sell with the mrs as she hates estates.

My only criteria is that the boot is bigger than our current Golf and the car is fairly quick, it should be no more than 18 months old.

The mileage Il be doing is low so there is no great need for a diesel but I would consider them.

My budget is around £26k

Saloon boots can be a ball ache coming from a hatchback. Hot estate is the right answer and I'm assuming the missus doesn't have any real substance to her objections other than "they look a bit old man" or "we don't have a dog, why would we need an estate". Golf R Estate - job jobbed.

Does it need to be a hatch or will a saloon be ok? do you need rear doors?

Not bad but for that money it would have to be the old shape wouldnt it, and the new shape the best I could get is the 2.0 litre so not exactly quick

Octavia? Superb? Both bigger boots than the golf and you could get a nice Superb for that money and it should be fairly brisk. Not golf R brisk but quick enough to get you in trouble.

Not a massive fan of either, could be badge snobbery to be fair

I feel your pain, I had exactly the same dilema and discussions, I went for the saloon in the end (A4 form Insignia) and to be honest the one thing I would change about the car is that I would have got an estate...

Do you not manage with the a4 boot?

Lets be honest estates rarely look good unless its an rs4 or rs6, having said that my wife doesnt like those either, but in my eyes its the perfect balance between a good drive and practicality. If I do get an SUV its going to take the fun out of the drive.

You either need to get rid of the badge snobbery or accept you're going to end up in an SUV mainstream performance cars are still very good cars so the 240bhp Mondeo/Skoda VR-S/Insignia are all worth looking at with your budget.

Personal preference but saloon boots are a PITA when you've been used to a large hatchouse, the single only thing I'd change on my A4

I like the look of that 340i, very nice.

How about an S3 in saloon guise? I think it looks great. It would be top end of budget but you are unlikely to get anything much quicker/practical* at 18 months or less. I'm sure some will say it's dull to drive, but for an everyday car I think it would take some beating.

The facelift with virtual dash and 4.6s to 60 would be even better, but it will be a while until in budget.
