The Vauxhall forum doesn't seem to get much traffic so thought I'd post this here in the hope of stop Elroy jnr buying the wrong car. He has just passed his test and having saved hard, has his eye on a Corsa Sri VX-line. It's what he wants, it's his money and they don't look bad little cars.
Insurance for all the petrol engine variants is about the same. So which is the best combination for a mixture of motorway/town driving. I've red the M32 gearbox associated with the 1.4T is made of chocolate. Is that still the case?
Some 1.4 n/a engines are 89bhp and £30/yr tax, some are 99bhp and £110.
The 1.0T looks appealing, but I have an old mans aversion to these small stressed engines.
Any pointers or advice gratefully received.

The new one can be had with a more insurance-friendly 75bhp version of the 1.4. Can't see any reason why it wouldn't be reliable.

I wouldn't worry about the 1.0T engine, they are proving to be more reliable than a few of the n/a engines so it'll be fine. It can be tuned a little easier than the n/a engines though which jnr will likely want to do.

The 1.2 was discontinued recently and a 1.4 75ps version introduced. I'd go for that one if it were me!
The 1.0T is a lovely engine, just keep an eye on PS, it varies dependant on spec! Think its higher in the Limited Edition.

His journeys will be around 60% motorway,/40% town and he's got about £8000. Id prefer a network Q car, but prices are absolutely all over the place. Is the M32 gearbox on the 1.4T ok now, or is it still to be avoided.

It only gained that reputation on the higher torque models. The 1.4T will be fine.

This

I have had M32 failures on two Astra VXRs both tuned and was the torque that done for them
Will be perfectly fine on lower powered models
The 32 in the name relates to 320nm

The 1.4 will be nowhere near that so all good
