My younger brother has just gotten a new job which involves a similar commute to mine, albeit to the other side of London. It's a 100 mile daily commute on the A406 > M1 > M25. 50 Miles each way.

His budget isn't set in stone but I would say < 10k? Going for a diesel + auto (bum leg)

What are the MK6 Golfs like? I know that they're decent but in terms of day to day living.

Are they prone to going wrong, a lot? Are they actually efficient?
He also suffers from extreme noise sensitivity so any rattles/noises in the cabin (bar the usual) will drive him mad. Things that are hard to find/fix, you know?

We'd be looking at the GT models so just curious if this is the right path to go on.

Alternative is the split-eye S60 Volvo, with the Auto gbox.

Thoughts appreciated.

I have a mk6 gtd and have driven a gt - for a commute he gt is the better overall car (I went for ge gtd for the better styling and seats)

The GT seats are very comfy, it will do high 40s/low 50s all day and as long as they are serviced correctly are reliable.

Only thing to watch is to ensure the dsg has been serviced (4 years or 40k) as otherwise they can be trouble.

Generally though they are solid reliable cars

I'd say a Focus then Golf/A3 & then the Alfa Giulietta is well worthy of a look, for me ride comfort & kit come before the badge to a certain extent when it comes to a daily.
