Last few times i've bought a car from a dealer, they've told me the price you see is the best price and won't take a penny less

Now i'm seeing a car dealer with an additional 'admin fee' plus VAT

WTF is this all about?

Stupidity tax to squeeze a few extra quid out of people who can't get their head around the fact that the bottom line is the only figure that matters.

It's a way of making the car appear cheaper than it actually is when it comes to advertising it.

I work in the motor trade and I think it's a crap practice, fortunately we don't have an "admin" fee.

I'm going to offer the asking price less the admin fee - surely every car dealer has an element of admin... does it relate to just paperwork, paying for the admin assistant, stamps...(?)

The cost doesn't exist, it's a fictitious add on to allow the advertised price to appear cheaper. Add the fee to the price of the car and that's the asking price; negotiate from there. Simples.
