3.5 Ton towing capacity 'small' 4x4
Discussion
Hey folks
Title says it all really, a friend of mine is in to his horses, he recently upgraded his trailer from a ~2.5ton setup to a 3.5ton trailer. He is chuffed to bits with the new trailer, its a massive Ifor unit, even has a mini-kitchen bit in the front with a camping stove and a toilet, however after he has already done numerous trips in it I had to be the one to point out to him today that his SWB Shogun only has a towing capacity of 2.8ton (I know this because I sold him it about a year back). He asked me if I knew of anything similar sized with a 3.5ton towing capacity, the only thing we could both think of was a Defender 90.
Niether of us are massive Defender fans, primarily because of the 'Defender tax' with them holding a fair whack more value than anything else on the market, secondarily because both of us have driven them before on the road
.
So yeah,
-3.5ton towing capacity, doubt the trailer can be downplated, judging on the size of it its probably overloaded at 3.5ton
-SWB sized, he daily drives it into the city, doesn't want to have to park a LWB/Pickup
-Efficient-ish, I used to get 28-30 out of his Shogun when I owned it, he doesn't really want any lower (he isn't a car guy so anything lower than the 40 that his other halfs Clio gets is 'awful')
-I think his budget is around £5k, which knowing him could probably stretch to 7 if show him something he likes.

He did a bit of research, he is looking at clean Daihatsu Fourtraks (hens teeth), Izusu Trooper 3.1 SWB, Defender 90s and is toying about just going for a Landy Discovery. With his budget he has pick of the lot of all of the above, bar defenders, since nothing 'newer' seems to meet his requirements. Any other recommendations welcome.
