I'm after a new Golf and have a particular spec in mind but I don't want to wait 3-4 months so I'm limited to whatever the dealers have in stock. I've spoken with a handful and they've pretty much come back with the line that there isn't anything available to match what I want. However, I have spoken to one dealer that does have what I want, albeit he won't come up with a suitable deal at the moment.

So, is it a case that a dealer can only see what is in his group's stock or is it that most of them can't be bothered looking?

15 years ago Renault dealers could at least see their own stock, and stock held by Renault UK. I suspect other dealers stock would be harder to get to...

Usually they'll only go with what's in dealer group stock. When I bought my Audi one dealer would only talk to me about stuff that had been sitting around for ages that he was being pressured to get rid of. Another was willing to let me look at his computer.

Surely any new Golf factory ordered now will be the facelifted car though.

I'm looking for a Clubsport, so not available to order unfortunately. I think I'll just have to get a list of all the dealer groups and phone around. Off to Geneva this afternoon though so it'll have to wait a day or two rotate

Why would the dealer cut his throat for a deal?

He knows he has the car to the spec you want. He knows you're seriously interested. He knows that there aren't any others around.

As for dealers seeing UK-wide stock - they probably can see everything but you need to take into account the car you're looking at. It's a special edition, reasonably limited in numbers. Dealer 1 is not likely to want to give away his chance of a deal on it to dealer 2. Dealer transfers within the same group tend to be ok. Outwith, well, not so much.

Hopefully he'll see sense but he doesn't seem to want to budge at the moment. Maybe he will nearer the month end

Why blow something out the door when you have something no other dealer has confused

^^^

This. Most franchises can "see" all stock that is unsold within the network. Franchises vary as to their approach on the release of dealer allocated stock. Some manufacturers require you to release any unsold stock upon request or, if you are unwilling to do so, register the car immediately. Others operate on it being your stock to do with as you please. Most dealers have working relationships within the network i.e. you give me what i need and vice versa.

At this point of a busy month dealers won't be gladly releasing desirable stock. Furthermore if what you want is in limited availability, and the dealer can see that, Dimebars is spot on, he's not going to release it nor offer massive discounts to shift it.

He also knows that if I don't get the deal I want I'll order an M140i and save nearly £4k. I know what I want, but I'm not desperate

He also knows that you can't order any more of them, that they're desirable and he can probably sell it for list price or near as damn it so why should he give it away.

Up to him, no problem. He's had it a while though

And hes probably not in the least concerned about that.

Its a common misconception that dealers must sell every car at any price.

Out of curiosity, were the other dealers offering you the discount you hoped for, but only on a factory order car or one in stock but not to your ideal spec, or did you not get that far with them as to discuss discount?

I've spoken to about 5 or 6 dealers - they all have access to close to what I want but not necessarily to a close-enough spec. The issue I'm facing is dealers not saying or knowing what other cars are out there in the system. If I have to phone more dealers to find out then I'll do it but it would be good to know what they actually can see.

It's not in a dealers interest to tell you what other dealers have though.

It can be, as they often swap cars, especially within a group

Well yes, but perhaps they don't want to or can't.
