Really don't know what car to get next.
Discussion
Company car driver, but I pay my own fuel. I can claim for business miles.
Current car is a 2014 Skoda Octavia Estate VRS 2.0 TSI 220 BHP. (I average about 32-34 mpg)
Budget for new car C. £30k
Over the years I've been lucky in that I can choose what I like as my company car up to my budget, so I've generally gone for fast petrol hatches and had 2 Leon Cupras, 2 Golf GTI's and now the Octavia VRS.
As I have recently started paying my own fuel, I'm tempted by a diesel although my mileage is low c.15k/year, it will be leased, so not worried about DPF's etc. My desire for MPG is higher than my desire for BHP these days, but I still would like a reasonably punchy car, for the odd overtake/B Road.
The VRS has been superb, and I'm really tempted to get another one - the diesel with a DSG box. I have had VAG cars for the last 16 years though, so am toying with the idea of a change.
Have also looked at a Focus ST Estate.
Am I mad to be going Diesel? Anything I might be missing?

high mpg.. time for a change..
I have an octavia and am thinking about switching to a bmw i3. 170bhp and instant acceleration.
At 15k per year, your fuel saving (compared to 35mpg) should be circa £2k per year. Im guessing your company car tax would go down too?
The saving could buy you an mx5 weekend toy or plenty of coke and hookers.

I've got a vRS Tdi manual and love it, but I'd have gone for a petrol at 15k miles. I'd be looking at the Leon Cupra 290 in your position, especially if its leased as the excess mileage charges are really cheap with Seat.
I think the Cupra would be overkill. 70% of my driving is bimbling along, I rarely use the performance of my VRS, and even when I do it's more than enough for our congested roads. Good car though. I also have a MK3 Petrol VRS , our last car was the 2.0 170 CR Superb , essentially the same engine as the diesel VRS, real world mpg was about 8mpg different over the petrol, we used to get 42-44mpg average out of the Superb and I get 35mpg average in the petrol.
I reckoned the petrol costs about £500 a year more on fuel but was around £1800 cheaper to buy . Dunno if thats a factor for you
Problem for me is I dont like the facelifted VRS
What about the 280 Superb ?

I'd take a look at the Mondeo in Titanium Spec with the X Pack, I'm sure you'll find some cracking lease deals on one they're a better steer than the VRS, they're more than match spec wise & power in both petrol & diesel form so worth a test drive IMO.
Doing 15k I'd say it depends on what you want if it's economy then it has to be diesel performance then it's petrol.
Diesel 210bhp Average MPG 56.5

Petrol 240bhp Average MPG 37.7

Petrol VRS does 0-60 in 6.6 but according to that listing the Mondeo takes 8 seconds Doing 15k I'd say it depends on what you want if it's economy then it has to be diesel performance then it's petrol.

Jaguar XE, 2.0 Litre Diesel, 180 bhp version, which gives you 0-60 in 7.4s. Combined fuel economy 67.3 mpg. A tad over your budget (£31,765), but a fine choice. Particularly as few people can tell them from the more upmarket XF.
Admittedly, for exactly the same price you can get the 250 bhp petrol version, which is tempting with a 6.0s 0-60 time, but the fuel economy drops to 45.1 mpg, so slightly defeats your purpose.

I get a car allowance now but have always said that if I get a company car in the future i would get an alfa to 'tick it off'
Certainly a change from a VAG!
