Help me choose my next car

Hi guys,
I have just got a new better paid job and I am thinking once I have completed my probationary period I thought about deciding to treat myself and get an Impreza WRX, now after some research my budget wont stretch to getting a decent reliable one that doesnt need a fortune spending on it.

I had an Octavia Vrs that cost me £1300 and in the year I owned it I spent around another £2k just keeping it on the the road. To be fair i was doing 60 miles a day in that I dont even do that in a week these days. So my thinking is I'm probably going to have to spend at least double that so around £2-3k and probably another grand or two in reserve in case anything goes wrong.
Or would i be better off putting the extra grand into buying the car?
So I have toned down my ambition for the time being and I was thinking a Celica or Hyundai Coupe which I was leaning to the Coupe as they seem a bit simpler and are newer so should be easier for parts and cheaper to fix when they go wrong.
Then I came across an FTO yesterday and it was reasonably priced, Im thinking it maybe more complicated and harder to get parts for, I know its a jap car so should be reliable....
I really dont fancy getting caught out again and spending thousands just to keep it running.

Of the 3, I think I'd favour one of the late model Celicas, personally.
You could look at a Ford Puma too, if it's big enough for your requirements.
They do rust, but if you find a good one, they're cheap to run and a hoot to drive.
I hate to say it, but any 'interesting' car costing that little isn't going to be guaranteed to be trouble free.
My son bought a Hyundai Getz for about £2700. It's not exciting (although it's nicer to drive than I expected it to be), but it's proved to be trouble free driving for a year so far (touches wood quickly!).
If you're worried about the unexpected costs of running something, then maybe something like that would be a better bet?
Another option might be to lease something like a VW Up - There were deals for under £100 a month a while ago (probably not quite so good now), but you know what you're spending and any issues (unlikely on a new car) will be dealt with by the warranty.
Anything old and nippy is likely (but not certain) to cost you money over a year's regular usage.

i can also attest to the hidden costs....bought a mitsubishi mirage asti because i fell in love with the rare JDM factor.
Paid £850 for it, and in two years i've spent £6250 on it. The perils of buying a 22yo quick and unusual car.
In the garage again today as it happens, having the front brakes looked at.

I bought an impreza for £2k and despite it being a clean, near standard car which had just had £3k+ spent on it I could still see it being an expensive car to run, hence I only kept it for a few months.
The early cars seam to be suffering with a bit of rust which is expensive to sort out itself.
It also wasn't really that exciting to drive, although I think I bought the more boring of the impreza's.
IMHO running a fun car on a sensible budget it what n/a hot hatches are built for. I'd have thought you'd have more fun running a decent civic type R than you would driving a leggy impreza with concerns over reliability.

Type R is definitely one I am looking into as you said should be very reliable. The early cars seam to be suffering with a bit of rust which is expensive to sort out itself.

Any other recommendations? I quite like the C4 VTS to look at but worries me with it being a Citroen. The Pug THP engine'd cars interest me a bit as well but I'd be worried about a Turbo car at this price poijnt, although nothing ever went wrong with the engine in my Octavia VRS. Same with the Leon and Ibizas since my experience with VAG cars hasnt exactly been great.
