I am looking to replace by BMW 130i with a newer hot hatch. I was hoping to go for the m140i but I need to be able to fit a tow bar to carry mountain bikes.

So piston heads massive, what are your recommendations and what is the hottest hatch which can legally have a tow bar fitted?

you are not towing thoug, you are using a towbar, most cars can be fitted with electrics.

If it's for a bike rack, it doesn't need to be type approved. Type approval only kicks in for a trailer with wheels on the road. So a normal 1-series towbar would be just fine, legally - but the exhaust and/or bumper might be in the way.

This seems to be the main issue if they are not designed with a tow bar in mind. Seems to be a struggle to get tow bars fitted.

Surely you can put a towbar on most cars?

For instance, a Golf R might or might not be type approved, but I bet you could fit the towbar kit for a Golf TDI which is type approved. Then you can carry bikes legally, you just can't pull a trailer that contacts the ground.

Any bloke in a shed could fabricate one to fit, probably for a hundred quid.

In fact, buy whatever car you want and I'll make you one when I make the one for my e46 cab for my downhill bike.
