Hi,

Looking at purchasing a V70 as a workhorse/family car. Currently have a 2006 RRS but starting up a new business, so I need something that can fit large bulky items in the rear (Building materials, plaster board, doors etc). I also need the car for our UK holiday's, so 800 mile round trips etc.

Decided on the V70. Had a look on the forum on previous posts but the last I saw was from 2014, so thought that I would get updated opinions. I have read some reviews where the cars are bullet proof, and others where they aren't, so thought best to speak to people who have had them.

The budget I suppose is up to £2.5k, although in all honesty I would like to keep the budget much lower than this.

Any advise on this model would be greatly appreciated, what to look for, what to avoid etc. .

Thanks

Darren

I'm looking at the same for the wife.....two smelly often muddy dogs, tip car etc...

I'm trying to do a deal on a 2005 2.5D SE, low owners, sub 90k miles, for £2k.

Some good info here.....but be warned you only read on the internet about the problem/ issues

Edited to add link - ooppps

Perol or Diesel?

I bought a V70 D5 for £1900 last year and I'm still using it as a daily driver

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I changed a couple of suspension parts as they were MOT advisories and I still need to change the in-tank fuel pump at some point (only an issue if I let the fuel level drop too low). Get one that doesn't pulse through the steering on corners if you can.

45-50 mpg though and it's got HUGE boot space. Comfy too.

Thanks. Yes, thats the problem with forums, you go on them when you have an issue. I always join a relevant forum when I buy a model of car to educate myself.

Hopefully some experienced owners on here can help point in the right direction biggrin

Im unsure as to whether petrol or diesel. Normally I have a high mileage diesel as the engines are better, but from what I have read the V70 petrol engines if serviced regularly are just as good?

Weren't there issues with the electronic throttle module inner pickups wearing away the surface tracks? - can be cleaned or rejigged by software, but never really goes away as it's physical damage. There was a shortage of replacement modules.

Also the driver info module, around the leadless solder changeover, failing and needing heating/resoldering.

The Audi diesels in the Volvos were good units.

If you go for a XC70 then the pre-Haldex (2003ish iirc?) units can fail due to uneven tyre wear giving transmission wind up.

Just about to press the button on this, low owners, low miles ...currently just having a quick inspection (on a ramp).

Supposedly it has full Volvo service history - not seen it yet, however did a quick MOT look up. Interesting to see how much they chew through shocks...

I wonder what brand shocks they used?
It's got a heavy front end, but afaik the shocks aren't really an issue.
Maybe expensive to replace if you have the self-levellers on the rear, but they shouldn't chew through them on the front - unless the previous owner hammered it over speed bumps.

south Manchester/central car - lots of potholes plus speed bumps

low miles (and scuffs on most corners) suggests school run car

Fronts were advisories for a few years and were only changed when they failed.

May be just me but I would have wanted to see the advisories fixed as well as the failures, rather than leave them until they broke.
