Hi there

I currently have a manual 2005 E90 330i. I am under pressure from the oh to switch to a 2017 520d purely on the basis the new car looks more up to date. From my point of view it also has more tech and the excellent zf 8 auto gear box.

I'm interested to gain perspective from anyone has gone from new to old or old to new. I'm keen to understand the actual day to day differences once the novelty has worn off in premium market cars.. i.e. new Audi/BMW/Merc to old Audi/BMW/Merc and vice versa.

I'm always thought I was of the belief that what makes a car is the engine and the no amount of new tech and looks can make up from going from a 6 cylinder n.a. to 4 pot diesel... tell me I'm right!

If its your car then you need to choose it and not your wife.

If there's nothing wrong with the 330i and you like it, I'd be inclined to stick with it. If it's knackered, you may find that a new 520d is a reasonable replacement.

I'd prefer the 330i out of the two, age and cost regardless. That's personal preference though, and that's what should guide you, IMO

The engine in the x20d is horrible and absolutely ruins a 5 series. It could have a million ratios in the gearbox and all the up to date tech but that engine is totally unsuitable for a car pretending to be a "luxury" product. After your 330i it will feel horribly rough, breathless at the top end, and the constant thrum in the cabin will irritate.

Go and try one. Then tell your wife to STFU.
