I adore my Maserati Granturismo but I do steal my wife's Golf GTD whenever I need to go somewhere practical. No point putting on a tuxedo to buy the bread.

So, often, she'll look out the window and see her car's not there. Pees her off a little, understandably.

There's us plus a 2.5 year old. And we've got another baby on the way. So idea is sell both the above. And buy one car which we're both happy with. Total budget c. £55k. And it's got to achieve all of what the above two cars manage to achieve at the moment between themselves.

I think we're seeking the impossible (if you think about all the pros of each of the two cars) but would love to be wrong. Have driven up the motorway several times and considered almost everything I think.

Chuck me a response and I'll dare to tell you why it doesn't work!

surely the most obvious answer is a panamera?

If you aren't averse to driving her GTD and are ok with VW's and steal it fairly often, then why don't you get a Golf R or maybe an Audi RS3 etc?

I have the MK7 Golf R estate and it's awesome, it's quick and practical. For your budget you can definitely afford something fairly decent, whatever you go for

Good luck

Family estate with a bit of go.

Haggle it down to £55k.

Why is she annoyed that the car's not there?

Because she can't use it?

If so, how does only having one car solve that issue?!

I really shouldn't read these replies while working ... cracking me up.

"Buy another" ... if only!

XC90 - seriously? I might compromise the one new car not being as pretty as the Maserati, but twice as ugly as both our existing cars. No way.

Tesla X breaks the budget and Tesla S is too big (she loves the Golf for it's size and easy of parking...which to be honest, I do too vs the Maserati)

FPace - good suggestion and actually on a shortlist. Might still be a bit big for Mrs..

Panemera - see answer to Tesla S but even more so. Have you ever been in one? I wouldn't mind being the chauffeur for two super-models or two presidents but a 0-year old + 2.5 year old? Less so.

MK7 Golf R estate is my preferred choice by far. Have suggested something like that (or an Alpina estate). Mrs thinks estates are impossible to park. I've never driven one.

New wife. See answer to first point.

Mercedes CLA/CLS shooting brake really grabbed me when they first launched. Looked like a perfect blend of power/looks/personality. But why doesn't anyone actually buy them? See about one a year, if that. Assume I'm missing something about them?

A 911 would be great but then need another for practical days. Maybe swap the Maserati for an older convertible 911 and then I'll be happier taking that to the supermarket!

She's annoyed when it's not there because she sees a £50k+ lump of metal sitting in the driveway 300 days a year losing money...

If you adore it, keep it and buy a little run around for yourself.

Alfa Giulia QV ... now that's got me thinking. And smiling. It certainly meets the dumping one pretty girl for another criteria. Now let's see if she can cook, clean and care for the kids too...

If it's just one car I'd go down the higher end SUV route. SUV's can be used for the fancy hotel stays but also the Asda run. They are easy to get kids in and out of, the misses will appreciate the extra perceived safety and they are flexible and practical for fitting all the family and stuff in. If you got a premium sporty one you'll get some performance although there's no getting around the loss of fun.

Damn good response. But I've got to be honest, since that Alfa popped up on my screen, the Golf Estate has been kicked out of the beauty contest.

Just go drive one! There's a few owners on here that bloody love them and you can ask questions to as well...

Before these two cars we had a Range Rover Evoque. Top of the range petrol, black on black with all the nice bits. Felt great inside, cocooned, great music, nice leather etc etc and even looked sleek outside.

I was even (nearly) ok with people expecting Joey Essex to come out of it wherever I parked. But then a good mate's wife summed it up, when she saw it and said "Why?".

And that's where it hit me (and may answer this query, much like the first response has already suggested).

A 'Black Pack' Evoque was trying to be everything and in a way, it had almost got there. But it was nothing particularly special in any way. There are alternatives cars which do one of the many things the Evoque does quite well, much much better. It's not stand out in any field ... except compromising everything we all want together very well.

I've never been that happy with compromise. So we sold it and (as you can see) went a bit extreme in the opposite directions with two cars.

For the record, the wife would have the Evoque back in a flash! So it's me that wants a bit 'more'. And before anyone does, please don't suggest that new Maserati SUV thing. Be honest, if it had a Nissan Juke badge on it (which I personally think it should), you'd never look twice. A beautiful car should still look beautiful even without its badge and grill intakes.
