I currently own a Golf mk5 R32 and a Seat Ibiza.
The Seat is on PCP and my Mrs uses it. I bought the Golf cash and really want to keep it pristine as it was one of the best specced and best condition when I bought it a few weeks ago. I very rarely use a car during the week as I walk to work and it stays garaged. I generally do a couple of hundred miles at the weekends in it.
Ideally I would like a third car To keep the miles down on the golf. I'm thinking of a diesel estate with a decent bit of power and fairly good spec - leather, cruise etc. Probably leaning towards German marque - it's all I know.
I'm just not sure whether to lease or go for something older. Thoughts please.

Just use the R32. This side of a Bugatti 57 Atlantic cars are meant to be driven. As you don't use the car for commute, what is the point of buying a diesel to safe the mk5 R32?? If well looked after, even a car with 200k miles can still look and feel very good.
What milage do you do p.a. and how many miles does the R32 have?

I did about 12000 last year. I am planning on keeping the r32 for the long term (10 years or so) and wanted to keep the value high and the miles low(ish). What milage do you do p.a. and how many miles does the R32 have?
It's currently just done 70k

Have to agree. What milage do you do p.a. and how many miles does the R32 have?
Buying or leasing a diesel estate to do approx. 5k pa does not make any sense.
A Luxo-barge shed would be my choice. To lease a newer motor will cost £3k per annum... maybe more. You will be tied in for 2 or 3 years. I would hope a V8 barge would not use £3k in fuel per annum doing minimal mileage.
Whenever you wish another change you shouldn't loose much in depreciation either with the barge.

So we are talking about a10 y.o. / 9-12k£ car that you may want to sell in 2027, or thereabout. It's currently just done 70k
There really is no point in buying, insuring, maintaining, driving an other (diesel(!)) car just to gain a higher price in 2027. Use that cash to keep the R32 in top nick and enjoy driving it

(That is unless you have that car syndrome where you always have to buy something new, and it is a fast vag diesel that tickles your fancy right now. In this case, do it!)

Fun car it may be, but an R32 is hardly a major Classic in waiting.
Sure, many a car could be worth a fortune in the future, but after all the running costs?
Enjoy it move on.
You're probably right, I just like rare cars and I doubt there'll ever be another v6 hatch. Sure, many a car could be worth a fortune in the future, but after all the running costs?

The running costs aren't a factor.

It's a Volkswagen Golf.
If a more suitable car for going to work and back has been invented yet I'm not sure what it is.

this is probably true of the smaller engined ones. I actually think the r32 is right up there with one of the most unsuitable to use 3 miles a day.I walk to work anyway.

If you feel this is your keeper, then GFI.The running costs aren't a factor.
I don't see it myself, but I do agree that many an NA will be valued in the future. Also, ignore value, there'll be just the joy of driving a proper old-school car. And 6 cyl too.
Personally I think mx5s and hatches should be be 4 cyl because of weight and balance. BMWs, AMs, Mercs, Jags should be 6 or more.

Anyway, cheers for the replies.
I understand why you want to keep it in good nick & low mileage, so unlike others on here I say turn it into a garage queen (I now have two
) but rather than buying a diesel estate I'd buy this:

Same engine some nice upgrades cheap enough for you to run it until it drops & you get to keep your mint R32

I didn't realise they were that cheap!

Your two "garage queens" aren't both r32s are they?!!
I know they're underrated & that one in particular has some choice upgrades, at that price you can lean on it & just enjoy it.
My garage queens are a CLK63 AMG & an E500 (4.7 BiTurbo) Coupe, the E500 was bought to keep the mileage down on the CLK now I have a CLK55 AMG to use/have fun with on a daily basis.

Regardless of if it's 'just a Golf' if you want to keep the miles off and fancy a daily you won't be fussy about go for it. It's what I do anyway.
I had a Saab 9-3 wagon for a while which was a great car. I spent a bit more on an E320 Merc which I've owned over a year and still impresses me. Either would be my recommendations depending on budget.
