I've been duffering around looking for a big family capable 4x4 for use as a general spare fun car, for camping, tip runs and we've. It won't be an everyday car, but it needs to be safe, comfortable and big, and my notional budget is £1500

I had a lot of very helpful suggestions on my previous thread about it, and have been driving myself nuts looking at everything I can find. I'm right on the verge of total buyer's paralysis, and suddenly a light has gone on over my head: P38.

Of course!

Except, I don't know anything about anything. So what do I need to look out for when I go to check the first one out tomorrow?

be very cautious about buying one for that budget!

diesel is a slug (unless you can find my old one which I put through JE Engineering!)
electrics electrics electrics
a bit of googling will give you a full list, but everything electric on them will go wrong at some point which is why I have gone back to a classic! Make sure the battery is in good condition, as otherwise stuff stops working, air suspension apcan be converted to coils but is better on air and not expensive to fix, heating system can have issues, etc

other than that, really lovely car and very under-rated

Don't. A 1500 quid P38 isn't going to be a 'fun' car unless you are a masochist.

They aren't even just about being good with a spanner. You need to be a pretty switched on auto electrician as well.

P38s only for those who really know what they are doing. If you need to ask etc.

WJ Grand Cherokees are pretty good and tough in 4.0 I6 form.
