430d to Type R
Discussion
Thinking about swapping my 430d for either a used fk2 or A new fk8 within the end of this year, my car is completely different and I'm not sure I want he civic yet as I need to test drive first but I really like the looks and being 23, everybody seems to think the car is a company car or isn't mine, it's not a case of me caring about what people think, I'm not a poser at all but I feel as if the bmw doesn't suit me!
Now the other reason I want to change it is because of me seeing an fk2 in the flesh and it blew my mind away, I mean in my position, an m140i/240i are no brainers but they just look so ordinary! The type r just looks special, it's a head turner, I can't imagine what the fk8 looks like in person.
the fk2's seem to be going for 24-27 for year old examples and the fk8's have a list of 32 for the GT models, id pay 6 k extra with my eyes closed for a newer model with delivery miles but I'm thinking ahead as depreciation is a big factor as the fk2's production run was short and not that many were made, does that mean they'll hold their value more over the new shape which will be in production for the next 5+ years?
Im not a driving expert where it would matter to me if the track is wider than the fk2's or they have different damping settings, it's all the same to me! Do I go for a new one or a year old one if I was to enjoy driving either

I had a supercharged Type R and have now owned a 335d for a year and a half - one is refined, great in traffic, comfortable and gives the right perception in a business environment (not that I agree with the notion), the other is a hard ride, must be driven above 5k to cover ground quickly and is s
t in traffic. However, it was an event to drive and the 335d does not come close to the fun factor or sheer driving enjoyment of hooking up a corner and screaming out of the apex towards nearly 9k rpm. By all accounts, the fk2 and the new iteration are great drives and if they didn't look quite so bonkers I'd switch in a heartbeat. Maybe I just need to stop caring what other people think! Your conundrum is not as crazy as many people will suggest

As good as it maybe, I would be embarrassed to be seen in an FK8 Type R.
And that's coming from someone who uses a Fiat Panda as a local run about.
They look...ridiculous. I can accept it being a bit of a characiture because of the genre of car, but the latest revision, well nothing seems to work, the styling is a real dogs dinner.
So on that basis, it's a no from me.

Different people like different cars shocker, hold the front page!
I know what you mean OP, and do what feels right, at the end of the day if you don't like the Civic in 6 months you can sell it and buy something else, it's only money.
The FK2/FK8 are superb cars for having fun in and are much more of an event than a 4 series diesel IMO so do what feels right.
I'm not a massive fan of the FK styling (but I'm a weirdo who thinks that the EP was the pinnacle of Type R fashion!) and I'd still have an FK and will buy one in the future!

Yeah I saw them but still! I'd rather have the 4 over a type R but then I despise type R's
I think after the initial excitement wears off you will wish you hadn't made the swap
I understand what you mean, it does seem like a stupid idea but is it? I mean cars have come a long way, if you compare a 2001 accord to an E46 3 series, the difference is huge but in 2017, I seriously doubt there is that much of a difference, especially in a kitted out civic type r. I think after the initial excitement wears off you will wish you hadn't made the swap
I had a 2016 Astra as a loan car when I had my car serviced (cock up at the dealership) and aside from the horrendous seats and stupidly slow (should be illegal) 1.4 100 horsepower engine, the car was actually nice and pleasant to drive. I mean if it had a 2.0 Diesel engine, it would be good enough for anyone, so I imagined a 310 horsepower 2.0 turbo civic with 3 stage adjustable dampers and a LSD, it kind of makes sense, I still need to test drive it and see what the trade price is for my car.

That's exactly what I mean, The bmw is blisteringly quick, 420lb ft from 2000 rpm, even on paper it's quicker than the type r but it just doesn't give me the buzz my old ep3 gave me, it's hard to enjoy. It's not the kind of car you want to push round a bend, you can do it and the car can do it with ease, it handles well but it just doesn't encourage you to do it

I think there is a clue in the OP's user name - he doesn't seem to be a committed BMW fan!
Surely he just needs to get a C63 AMG?
Not sure why he might want a Honda though - Fernando Alonso wouldn't recommend them.
Hahahaha you know, my car literally explains everything doesn't it, it's me being sensible, thats why I'm thinking about the type r! My car is a 4 door version of a coupe with a 3.0 Diesel engine, I wanted the coupe but thought about a 2 door being harder to sell, I wanted the 435i but got a 3.0 Diesel as a straight 6 petrol turbo would be 100% harder to sell. I want to get something fun and silly. Yes a c63 is exactly that and not to mention affordable (2012 modes going for under 25) but there is no way I'd spend that kind of money on 65 grand new car with no warranty and a 14 mpg average figure from all the people I've asked Surely he just needs to get a C63 AMG?

I do know what you mean, it isn't much of a looker but that's my point, unless my car is fresh out the car wash clean on a sunny day with the wheels shining and the blue brake calipers bulging out, it just blends in, doesn't stand out, could be a 5 series to somebody who doesn't know about cars, the same would go for a m140i or a golf r! The civic is in your face, I like itAnd that's coming from someone who uses a Fiat Panda as a local run about.

Tough one but I'd go with the fk2, didn't like the styling at first but after having seen it in person and then taken it for a test drive (whilst my fn2 was in for a brake check) i absolutely love it! It looks the nuts and drives beautifully. Love the quad exhaust looks and it's sound!

OP, just do it. There's nothing worse than being a car enthusiast a driving a car which is definitely not for you. Obviously, get a test drive of an FK2 and make sure that you like it first. Then either get a decent used model or go for the FK8 when it's released.
FYI, i really don't like my current B9 Audi A4. It's not my type of car at all. I like small, nimble and fast hatchbacks. My current car is none of those things. I'll be, most likely, buying an old Clio 172/182 next year. Friends of mine think i'm mad but i'm actually really excited!

So I just got back from the test drive of the FK2 and my god that car is a beast, I test drive a C43 AMG with 375 bhp and an M135i with 320 bhp previously and neither felt as quick or as crazy as this type r, wow! The power delivery isn't as smooth as the BMW or Merc, out of nowhere you get vtec and the turbo kicking in, didn't even look at the rev counter/speed as the car requires your full attention, there is a fair bit of torque steer if that's what you call it and I'm not sure I like it, I mean If money was no object, id buy the car in a heartbeat for the weekends/track.
As for swapping it with my 4 series for a daily car, I'm not so sure I can really enjoy the car as it is just so brutal for public roads, I accelerated out of a bend at 30 on a road that went from 40 to national speed limit and booted it, second to third gear, while concentrating on the steering, all I hear is the salesman shouting slow down and I saw that I'm doing 75, didn't even realise!
The ride and comfort is horrendous compared to my car but It's expected when comparing the 2 cars.
I wish the there was a speedometer next to the rev counter as my ideal steering wheel position blocks the view of the mph gauge! I really want this car but it just doesn't make sense to be my daily car! I was told the ride is better on the new shape and the torque steer is improved as well so I will test drive the latest one when they get them in September, until then, the BMW is staying!
