Advice today pls: car tax vs pickup tomorrow
Discussion
To say up front, that I have already called the DVLA and whilst the person I spoke to was a delight, am still confused...
Have sold a car privately, have been paid via bank transfer today in anticipation of pickup and giving V5C/receipt tomorrow.
As it's a higher tax vehicle, was looking to maybe get the tax back as it's the end of the month today, request refund today rather than have to pay for all of July when it's not going to be hitting the road any more. That means I would need to register the sale today.
Should I register the sale today, as long as vendor is in line and I have all address details correct (he hasn't signed his log book part).
If that happens online, does the purchaser need to also tax it from today, and what if we date a receipt and V5C as 01/07 tomorrow? They may not match...
I'm increasingly thinking it's just easier to swallow the £50 it would cost me for July, but it means double tax paid which simply riles me a little.

V5 transfer has now moved online. Bizarrely though, it's only "open" 7am-7pm. I sold a car on Wed evening and tried to do the RFL refund 8pm same evening but couldn't. Next day it did (which is how I found out the V5 transfer process is now online as that's how you apply). However, it automatically made the "date of sale" or more strictly date of Keeper transfer Thursday so I couldn't backdate it. My concern with that is if the buyer picked up a ticket on the way home, I'd be on the hook (think that's a long shot ? Nope, each of last 3 cars I've sold I got an FPN within a week....). That's why I always do a Bill of Sale with date/time signed by buyer.Have sold a car privately, have been paid via bank transfer today in anticipation of pickup and giving V5C/receipt tomorrow.

In your case doing a transfer today to get the RFL refund will transfer Keeper record today (although title to said car is still yours). So the risk is if the sale falls through (unlikely given the BACS transfer) you have a ball ache with DVLA and two more former Keepers. I'd play it safe personally, as annoying as it is.
For the new owner, they need to tax it or SORN it immediately they collect otherwise they run the risk of penalty (if caught). They obviously can't tax it until you've cancelled yours.
