My wife needs a new local run about. School run, short trip to work and the occasional venture further a field 4-5k pa. She likes her cars to last 5 years (+/-). She want reliable over flash etc

two local options that my wife seems to prefer. not cheap but seem 'honest' and fit the bill.

Car needs to be easy, no stress buying, running, servicing etc

Mazda2 2013 venture (with everything) 30k. 12 months main dealer warranty. think £30 tax pa. £6,250

Toyota Yaris 2014 (old grill) icon+ (almost everything) 35k. 6m independent warranty. think £115 tax pa £6,450

both cars is condition as you'd expect. Vey good. odd nick.

Yaris is a nicer car imo.

We have never owed a Mazda or Toyota.

Thoughts? Things to double check?

Neither of them should give you much trouble at that age/mileage.

If both of you prefer the Yaris, then for the sake of a couple of hundred quid I'd go for that. Try haggling it down though.

Just FYI - The Yaris should still be covered by the 5 year manufacturer warranty until 2019 (it is transferable with the car).
