In the market for one, can't decide which route to go down though.

Much prefer the evo myself, it just feels like an absolute weapon whereas whilst the Subaru is a fantastic car that makes a fantastic noise it just didn't (for me) stir the soul like an Evo.

Evo's are much more fragile, they certainly don't posses the stereotypical Japanese car reliability anyway. That'll no doubt rile up the Evo fans, but it's the truth! I'd always take the Imprezza.

Looked at both before I had my old blob eye STI, Evo's seem to rot from the inside out, Subaru's rot from the outside in. Both will no doubt need a rebuild for some reason.

Buy whichever one you like most, they make no sense, will cost you a bd fortune to run and try your patience to a level you never thought possible. Bloody good fun though

not sure which versions of each you are looking at but here's what my choice would be depending on the vintage.

evo 1/2/3 vs sti v1/2 = subaru win
evo 4/5/6 vs sti v3/4/5/6 = mitsu win
evo 7/8/9 vs sti bug/blob = mitsu win
evo 10 vs sti hatch = subaru win

I had a 5 for 4+ years and a 8 MR for 18 months albeit many years ago when they were much newer and covered just short of 70k miles combined. Only issues I had was a failed wheel bearing early on the 5 and the struts started knocking which I replaced with a set of Tein adjustables and that was it.
I'm guessing 15-20 yrs on (now) though you could be right.

For the 10k I was looking to spend I choose the 05 widetrack WRX STI. I always wanted a Subaru but was open to an Evo but it seemed every car at this price point seemed to have had a rebuilt engine and rusty arches, AYC problem are extremely common too. I also wanted a practical car I could actually use on all occasions rather than just sitting in the garage and I think the Subaru is more of an all rounder.

Name another car that can easily do 100k miles with it's arse thrashed for the majority of those. There's a few on the evo forum that have done 200k+miles, all depends on how it's looked after. Subarus have their problems too! 5 speed boxes are chocolate, the later 2.5 engines are crap. They eat through cylinder liners. They're far from perfect. Don't get me wrong evos have their problems but to say they're unreliable is very silly indeed

Don’t forget your matching team wear, for some reason these cars attract more than your usual owners with matching manufacturer clothing. (Also Monaro owners)

My daily is a jap import EVO VI. It is running around 370bhp and is such a dramatic drive. Pulls like a train on boost and handles immensely.

I honestly believe that all petrolheads should try one, they are unreal down a country road.

nonsense, my 9 year old Subaru (legacy H6) is far from rotting from the outside in - They make cars other than Impreza also btw.

Maintenance for me is basically a tank of petrol a month, I had a MOT last week, second pass without any advisories in a row.

A EVO is going to cost quite a bit more to run than a Subaru i would imagine, the economy makes my Subaru look like a ford fiesta in retrospect.

We're on our third Outback now, one 1997, one 2004 and one 2010 - not a single one has had a spot of cosmetic rust, and the underbodies have been extremely clean even at 100k+ miles.

My uncle has an Evo 9 and a couple of his friends have had various Scoobies and personally for me, the Evo is much more dramatic (from the passenger seat anyway!) and definitely the one i would have over the others.
