I have a toyota gt86. thinking of changing to a low milage 2005/6 3.4 Cayman is it a good swop.

Depends....

The Cayman will be a much nicer place to be - and one hell of a lot quicker, almost too quick for UK roads.

I'd say the 86 will be cheaper to run and a little more practical..

Lovely position to be in though!

Dunno. I was going to write something about residuals and depreciation but It's so hard now, look at the price for a good Nissan 200SX vs a Boxster of the same age...

I think it depends which you prefer, any residual value the Porsche holds will be wiped out by parts and servicing costs so that's not an answer. The badge is nice on the Porsche, and neither are 'crap cars' but I'd say it very much depends on your circumstances, A GT86 that's in budget can be enjoyed. A Cayman that makes you lie awake at night worrying it'll sting you for a bill can't be.

I don't know your finances but having done something similar to the above* (with Nissan 200SX and BMW 635CSi years ago) I know which I preferred.

(*sold my Nissan and bought a 635CSi which then proceeded to try and bankrupt me. I was 23.)

For sure, but bear in mind Porsche servicing and repairs will be in a different league price-wise!

Don't know too much about Porsches, but I'd research "bore-scoring issues" before I bought!

Though I'd never personally use it, it ain't wrong, just an alternative.

Maybe the OP is Dyslexic, like myself........I also own a GT86. As for swapping it for a Cayman, no chance, I don't need to impress the neighbours.

You need to seriously look at the ownership costs, Porsches are not something that can be run on a shoestring. It might be cheap to buy because it is an older car but it still has the running and repair costs of a car costing twice as much as the GT86 and no doubt with lots of worn out parts as well.

A friend of mine has an 08 Cayman S

It's lovely and has carbon brakes

I asked him the other day how much a new set would cost him ... £8k was the answer

I was feeling raped by BMW who just charged me £200 for new pads on my X3 .. but I'm feeling much better now !

Well, I was in the happy position to be able to consider a BRZ (GT86), R300, GTi, Cayman or similar. I was sorely, sorely tempted by the BRZ/86 idea, but I needed proper rear seats for some occasions, and decent torque. I bought a 335d, because at the moment I have some regular long journeys once or twice a month. Of the two you mention, I personally would chose the GT86, I think it would cause less worry, be just as enjoyable, and from I have noticed, a rarer sight than a Porsche.

A 'cheap' Porsche of this age can be a lovely thing but won't be cheap to run and has the potential for eye wateringly expensive problems. Question is, do you feel lucky? laugh

If you don't need four seats take a look at a 10 year old Elise S2 with a Toyota engine, cheap to run, great fun to drive, keep a year or two then sell it on for the same price smile

Perhaps consider the Cayman 2.7. Still quicker than the GT86, fantastic handling, will be a 2007 onwards model and is known to be a more reliable engine than the gen 1 3.4 engine cars.

Porsche servicing is extremely cheap and more than comparible

You'd feel less better if you made a valid comparison!

8k is for discs and pads (and possibly calipers)

New discs and pads on your X3 would be more like 1k, then factor in the life of PCCB (100k+ miles if no tracking and looked after) then you could be looking at 8k v 4k.

Still a big difference but he gets to drive a Cayman S and you er..... aren't 😉
