Was looking at buying a car today, after doing a HPI check it has flagged up security watch, and it said that it wil pass my details onto whoever placed the marker on it to contact me within an hour. but have not had a phone call yet.

I phoned the dealer and he said that it is on there because they purchased the car from liquidators after a company went bust. They made no mention of this in previous calls regarding the car. They said that it should be removed from the check in about a week.

Does this sound fishy, and would you buy a car that has got this marker on it. Or have any experiances with this marker, as it is the first time that i have seen it on a HPI check.

My gut has said dont buy it, so i have not gone to look at it. But it is does have certain options on the car that you dont see very often, which cost about £2000 from the factory and it is one of the cheapest on autotrader

What kind of dealer is it? If there's an issue then the buck stops with them, but it could involve you in a bit of hassle.

Would paying all of the price, or the deposit, on a credit card provide additional protection if something goes wrong?

Security watch can be anything. Commonly used by liquidators, lawyers, businesses to track assets. Iirc only the person recording the interest can remove it. If you don't get a response there should be a number on the HPI to call. If you are financing it the lender will normally not lend until the marker is cleared.

The garage says it is a family owned business that has been running for over 85 years.

Thanks papa, that helps a lot. It doesn't seem as bad as I first thought. I will try ringing HPI later, to see if there is still an interest in the car. Hopefully all will be good and it is still for sale by the weekend.
