I had a short test drive in a Golf R today but tbh I couldn't assess much of anything with it. I need it for at least a couple of hours, will they let you do this? I do remember MINI letting me have a Cooper S for 24hrs many years ago but I am a bit out of the loop in terms of what dealers will do nowadays.

I had an F10 M5 for a weekend demo, but the dealer had sold me a few cars before

Like someone above said, some will, some won't

Dealers prefer shorter loans. If they give every prospect a free car for a day, costs soon get gigantic. The average car dealer only makes +3% net profit.

Some people rent their target car from Hertz, Enterprise, etc. for a day or halfday and take it for a good rag.

It does seem to vary from brand to brand. Hiring might be the better option.

As above, some do
Although I think that a few hours (on your own) to drive the roads/simulate the use you usually need should be enough to figure out if you like a car
As I found out recently. Some cars are only insured during working hours - so no evening or weekend loans (this was in Germany) - to keep insurance costs down
