Hi,

I'm after a car for my daughter to learn to drive in. She's 17 in 3 weeks so insurance is the main concern. First 3 months on provisional insurance, but then the big bill!

I don't mind playing around with some basic mechanics, so the simpler the better.

Ideally <£1k, but would go to £1.5k.

Any recommendations from people who have been down this path before me please?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Chris

Just be careful that the saving you make on the car doesn't hurt you in insurance. My parents got me a brand new Skoda Citigo to learn in. The insurance was £1000/yr close enough. The danger with a used car is insurance companies might think it won't be treated with the same respect. I've heard stories where Bentleys are cheaper to insure than 1.4 fiestas...
Basically, play around on comparison sites if you can. Potentially look at finance on a new car - the insurance saving might just cover it.

Yeah, I can't remember the actual vehicle. It was something nice, but not a Bentley. I actually ran a quote for a brand new Bentley continental... £11K with £15K excess. Although, if you can afford that car...

But the cheapest insurance for a £35,000 Ford Mustang (as opposed to £150,000 Bentley)... £6700 p/a.
Not that far off the Bentley quote. The point being, a young driver is probably a lot more likely to trash a Mustang than a Bentley. Stereotypically, anyway. And most insurance payouts are those whiplash injuries/hit supercars. Both of which are third party liability, so makes no difference if you're in a Bentley or a Beetle.

What are you talking about. £6700 is quite a long way of £11000, and a new driver is unlikely to drive and/or trash either.

Suzuki wagon R?

They cost peanuts, and are dead simple to work on. Planning on picking up one for my gf in the next year or so, £500-750 seems to net a very tidy one.

We've just been through this with our daughter and her test is next week.

The budget was a little more and we found a VW Up for her. £650 insurance while she's learning (yes, with a black box) and a quote of £1000ish (total, not extra) for when she's passed.
