I am looking for help - my mother has a 52 plate RAV that she adores, however its old and no longer very reliable.

We need to find her a new one but she wants one with the same dimensions as before. She's test driven the new RAV but says its too big. This situation has been going on for years now, she has the money to buy a new car if only we can find the right one.

Has anyone any suggestions - please!

They're pretty much all going to be bigger simply because manufacturers can't resist making new models bigger. The contemporary RAV4 and its competitors, although still classed as 'small' are actually a size or two bigger than what they were back in the day.

How about the Kia Soul or Suzuki Ignis. The latter in particular I like, it looks a bit odd at first but has character and the virtue of being small, simple and unpretentious.

She's test driven the BMW , Range Rover and Audi but says all are too wide!
She likes the height of the RAV4 but seems to have lost confidence and won't countenance anything bigger or lower down.
The DAcia looks wider than RAV too - I'm away to look at spec on others suggestions...

Toyota CH-R, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX3 , Kia Sportage, Hyundai X35. There are any number of crossovers out there that will give her the height, but very few will be 4x4 if she really needs this. My wife has a 1999 Rav 4 3 door, it's a really great little car to drive. We love it , don't need it, but won't ever sell it.

The new T-roc from VW shares the Q2 platform but looks narrower on the specs.

We've a 2009 Rav4. Owned from new. Brilliant car. Just keeps going and going, for pennies. It's going to be a hard car to replace.

We bought an Evoque a few years ago for something a bit more luxury. Plan was to just keep the rav as a workhorse/dog chariot. But tbh I never drive it, always just jump in the Toyota. To be fair to the Evoque though it is a very nice place to be and so easy to drive.

The misses has just bought a new shape Mazda CX5 which is a nice drive, well equipped (love the HUD) and parked next to the Rav more or less the same size. Might be worth a look?? Or maybe the CX3, but that is quite small inside.

I quite like the look of the new duster, which is out soon. Probably have a look at that but depends on engines and transmissions offered. 4x4 is essential for my work.

Another vote for these two.

Both are rather spartan by modern standards, but very similar to the era of Rav you are asking for. Dacia will likely be cheaper to run as they offer a small diesel, Jimny is built tougher if you do actually happen to take it off road.

You could try finding a very low mileage last of the 3-door RAVs - which were sadly (inexplicably?) discontinued in about 2005/6.

I'd go for the 2.0 petrol engine - no reason for it to be unreliable.

I don't really think there's a modern equivalent...

non car people can be a nightmare in this regard, they wont/cant see any logic and it becomes impossible to recommend anything for them, my MIL is just like this. tell her to go the toyota dealer when she is in the mood and they will have something adequate.
