Another what car thread!!!

So it's finally time for me to buy my first car having been a named driver on a parents car for the last year..

Reason being, I'm starting a new commute which will be around 90 miles there and back, 4 days a week. Therefore ideally I'm looking at a diesel with a budget of around £3.5k.

Hoping you guys can guide me to interesting options that fit my needs but aren't 'boring'.

Thanks

Good shout, I've actually been looking at the Mk1s however the durability (lack off) of the interior puts me off. Also will be happily corrected on this, but the PD150 is more prone to problems compared to the PD130.

You're going to be in your first year on your own insurance, so I would check out what a 1.9 tdi popular with young people would cost you to insure.
Don't know how much you have budgeted for insurance, but if you're budgeting £3500 for a car, you could be looking at a third to a half of that for your insurance ( unless you are 40 of course smile )

Try looking at cars that young inexperienced people don't buy/crash ( again if you're not 40). X type, Honda Accord, etc etc.

Toyota Auris SR180 2.2L diesel. I bought one and it's a great little car. Goes like the clappers and with a tuning box you can get over 200hp out of it with 350lbs torque.

Ford focus, circa 2005-2010 age?

Really really good cars, not expensive to insure, but have climate control, cruise etc. Get the Ghia version. Saw one on ebay with 155k miles for £850! Parts are cheap and I can vouch they crash well if you get it wrong hehe

Yeah i second the vote for a focus, decent all rounders, cheap to buy run, and fix. even lower level zetecs make it look quite sporty too. titanium or ghia for the goodies.

Oh and front heated windscreen is one of the best things i have ever had on a car.

A volvo s60 d5. With your commute, you'll want a proper cruiser, trust me, I bought the wrong car for my 100 mile commute and should have gone for comfort.

Isn't this the same 2.2 D4d engine found in the IS220d, and therefore extremely susceptible to head gasket failure?

180 miles per day is quite a lot of driving, so I'd go comfort and durability. The Auris isn't a bad shout but what about a lexus IS220d? Insurance would be interesting as not a boy racer car, but still a moderately swift RWD car.

Well mine is fine. Do you really think a company like Toyota doesn't test its cars?

The 1.9 PD lump is a cracking lump, the 150 does suffer more problems that the 130/160 though.

You can look at things like MK1 Leon, MK4 Golf. MK4 Ibiza, MK1 Fabia, Polo,

If you get a MK1 Leon the one to have is a FR+ which basically has the Leon Cupra R body kit fitted already and smaller LCR wheels.

How many miles are on it? That engine is a well-known time bomb, which Toyota had to extend the warranty on to cover the pretty much guaranteed head gasket failure happening on cars with as few as 50,000 miles.

I'm not saying it's a bad engine when it's running, but don't kid yourself (or others) that it will live a long and reliable life.
