How low is low? What rpm do you want?

What's the budget?

How small are we talking, fiesta size or focus size

Volvo V40 would be good for motorway miles

Why do you care what rpm the car runs at on the motorway?

Budget-wise, good point sorry, up to 7000 or so.
A V40 would be too large, something fiesta / polo sized.

Low rpm because I'm looking for relaxed cruising.

Going any distance at 70mph at 4K rpm in a 1.2 hatchback is a truly miserable experience.

Especially if the car has little/no sound proofing, you hear so much tyre roar and engine noise

To be honest that's where lots of small hatchbacks fail, they have all the technology but when it comes to sound proofing and having a smooth, refined engine they're not so good, admittedly they have improved a lot in the last 10 years or so.

Mazda 2?

I should think anything relatively new will have fairly high gearing these days.

My Mazda 3 sits somewhere just above 2000 RPM at 70. The engines are quite torquey at the low end of the RPM range so if the 1.5 Skyactiv has the same traits, perhaps they've done similar.

Sometimes you can find this stuff out by watching point of view drive videos on Youtube.

That would be perfect, however haven't found that in a smaller car yet.
Yes I'll continue trawling

Ok, I just read a review that puts the diesel version at around 2000 rpm at 70 mph.

http://www.wheels-alive.co.uk/new-mazda-2/

Scroll down past the petrol stuff.

But I suspect that car is probably way nicer with the petrol. Ill keep looking.

Thanks! That looks ideal.
I don't mind diesel if it's euro6- going to look at prices now

Found the gear ratios.

For the petrol, it'll do 26mph per 1000 rpm in top gear. So looking at 2700-2800 rpm ish. (this is for the 115 hp version).
the diesel will pull 38.6 mph per 1000 rpm in top.

I got the data from here:

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/

its a pretty horrible site to use, but holds data on a lot of cars.

Polo 1.2 TSI runs at 2200 rpm at 70mph and is very refined on the motorway
