Back story we have a low millage 1996 MX5 1800cc parked it in the drive and noticed water coming out, found a small casting bolted to bottom of engine block corroded.
Refilled water took to local garage who replaced and poi ted out it also needed a water pump as it had a slight leak, they replaced belts at the same time. Didn't use the car for 6 months following the repair.

Now on short journeys 2 or 3 miles its OK any further and it overheats, removed Thermostat made no difference, electric fan is working OK, is it likely to be a faulty pump, any one else out their got any ideas or similar experience.

Not sure this should be in the Car Buying part of the forum?

Airlock in the system, maybe?
Has the radiator got water in?
Any mayo in the oil filler cap?

Yes, similar experience.

After replacing every single part of the cooling system and two engine rebuilds I gave up and shunted it on for next to no money.

Not sure if this is helpful to you at all...

IME it's usually
a) The rad,
b) Air locks - try bleeding it with the parked on the steepest slope you can find.
c) Water pump.
d) Head.

Is the rad getting hot at all?

Have bleed the system two or three times in the last couple of weeks. Car had been running perfectly prior to water pump change, radiator seems to be getting hot , will run it up to temp and check that it is hot top to bottom. With the thermostat removed assume I should be able to see a flow of water when engine is running with the rad cap removed
Suspect either faulty pump fitted, head gasket failure
