Currently got an Audi A4 AVANT (B7) 2.0 TDI.

Its served us pretty well; can get a load of baby crap in the back, and torquey enough to pull the caravan (I'm embarrassed to say I acquired [Most 34yr olds have caravans right..? Shush.]) easily enough, but its time for a change.

With Diesels becoming more and more out of favour, I'm keen to replace it with a petrol.

Any suggestions for something that will have enough whoosh to drag a caravan along comfortabley, and serve and decent family car. Ideally an estate too. For not much more than 5k...

go!

I think a Mondeo will give you the most car for your money.

The towing limits vary wildly though so be mindful of that. Big engine does not necessarily mean big towing:

Mondeo 2.5T if you can find one. Tow car of the year when it was launched and can now be picked up for pennies.

I don't tow caravans but rather use it for the bikes and even fully loaded to the gunnels with two bikes on the trailer it's barely noticeable I'm towing anything. Only really notice it a bit on the brakes and then when I empty the car it feels very spritely! smile

Good shout on the Mondeo. It seems only Ford and Volvo make reasonably sized petrol engined estates.

Valid point also on towing capacity

The cheapest thing would be to keep the car that you already have. Its good for towing and is big enough to carry everything that you need.

Subaru Legacy ? The problem with this size of car is they are nearly all diesel so the choice of petrol power is limited. Any decent petroleum with enough grunt are likely to fall in the £500 tax bracket.

How about a Jaguar XF 3.0 petrol ?
