Hi everyone,
Just signed up even though I've used the site loads to get advice on cars, restorations etc - thanks to you all!

I'm in a dilemma! I have a 3 year old Audi S-Line and it's dull, time to go. I really wanted something more fun and after going back and forth, decided a Golf is a good, safe option (although I almost bought a Subaru WRX Hatchback and still really like that car! been told by friends the 2.5 engine has problems though?)

So... I really need to keep saving for bigger house, future, blah, blah, blah so really, I shouldn't be spending too much. At first I thought if I went for a £18k Golf R this would surely hold it's value well. Then I realised I am doing 10-13k miles per year and will it really be worth much if I buy it on 60-70k and aim to keep for a least 3 years+ ??

So then I thought, i'll spend less and look at a Golf GTI but all the ones I like at £4.5k-£6.5k are really high mileage 100-140k. So now i'm scared i'll end up with a nightmare that just ends up costing loads on repairs or dies on me! It's so hard also, as garages that are selling always say; New MOT, just done Cam etc but I've read so many times it's not worth the paper written on.

Best one i've seen is in Liverpool but it's a long way for me to go!

Any advice on what you would go for would be much appreciated smile

Someone wants a "fun" car and is looking at Golfs. Sorry but I despair.

The Golf is a perfectly fine utensil. Although IMO has about the worst image of any car of the last 40 years. So I really struggle to see the appeal unless you really covert such an undesirable label.

But fun??? I just do not see how they fulfil that brief on any level. Surely it'll be just as boring as an Audi hatch considering they are built from the same components by the same parent company and target the same market and buyers.

Plenty of fun car out there however.

The problems with the 2.5 WRX were limited (IIRC) to the STi variant. We loved our WRX-S hatchback when we had it.

If you like the WRX then get one the problems were on the STI's as someone has already said also if you want a fun hot hatch grab yourself a Megane RS250.

The WRX-S is worth seeking out. Its been breathed on by Pro-Drive so has the Prodrive Performance Pack fitted, along with 18 inch prodrive alloys and some prodrive body bits.

Ours was black, with the anthracite rims.

Heres a blue one for sale

As others have said you find the Audi boring but are considering a golf? Basically the same car. Buying something without a VAG badge will probably also get you some thing newer for same budget too. Wrx sounds much more interesting to me.

Thanks for the replies. Really helpful.
I've loved the hot hatches I've had over the years. I'm not precious on make, each one has been amazing & ive been lucky to drive some of the best. I guess I'm asking alot but I'm sure I don't have to spend £18k to get a drive that will be a day to day but also makes me want to get in my car every spare minute!

They have a few niggles,

Check that the air conditioning is cold and working
Moisture can get in the rear lights so check these
The front arches and around the boot lid VW badge can rust so check these areas
The 3rd rear brake light is another weak point, make sure this works as can be an MOT failure if not and are a bit of a faff to replace!

I prefer to buy privately, you can see how the owner knows/treats the car and have found from experience they will be more open and honest. Just check the usual points under the bonnet, no nasty noises etc. If the cambelt/water pump hasn't been changed in a while I would set this aside in the purchase price and get it done after you buy it for piece of mind.

I would personally buy one in manual, tartan seats with Xenon headlights. Less features, the less to go wrong really.

Here is a good guide to run by: http://www.evo.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/14090/vw-golf...
Thanks, I'm using this guide, fingers crossed!

My wife really loved our WRX-S. She really fell for it when we drove it. It was "different" and you dont get the "oh my mum drives one of those" comments you get with something like our A45 (no, dipst, your mum has an A160CDI rolleyes)

Ha! Yes lol it's not been practical being in a 3 door with my daughter needing friends to get in (only 2 back seatbelts) I thought maybe I should get something more sensible then I saw a dad pull up in an astra hatch GSi and I was so jealous! I knew I needed something somewhere in the middlesmile 5 door, not so much I'm killing the mortgage fund but enough to enjoy!

I was ready to buy the subaru but got a little confused around the 'forged' vs 'non forged'
i know this is the pistons & forged is better but still read so much conflicting advice and left me thinking ok forged, when, by who etc...Too confusing!
