My shout is for this, even though I'm sure the obvious answer is a 335d, I think this would be just fantastic, I've heard of mid 4 to 60mph on these, some said 4 seconds dead on the Type R's, and this is pretty much a Type R estate if I'm not mistaken?

AWD means lower 0-60mph times. But 20-80mph won’t be as impressive.

That said I’m an Impreza fan and like these so I’m not knocking the car. Just the reliance on the massively flawed 0-60mph stat.

I'd imagine that to be the case, although I'm surprised these aren't more popular in today's on paper stats car market.

Depends what you mean by all rounder. I would say not. How would you feel about doing a daily 4 hour motorway commute including stop start in that? Noisy, heavy clutch, plastic interior, massive running costs, worrying where you park it... I get that it's fast and cool if you like that sort of thing and I expect it handles and would be fabulous in poor weather, but...

Boring I know but some kind of large engined BMW probably - drives nicely, quick, RWD, fairly anonymous, get a DCT for auto (motorway/stopstart) and flappy paddle (fun) options. diesel if you need the mpg, 3.0+ petrol if not, comfortable, etc. Only downside I see is winter performance - winter tyres? Did they do a 4wd version? Shame they didn't do the DCT box in the e90 touring/saloon...

It's probably my age xD I would say the 335d/340i are pretty much ideal for anyone. My parents' 340i touring is everything you described, works well in the snow compared to previous cars. For me, those STI GF8 wagons are an itch I'll scratch as soon as possible.

Fuel economy aside perhaps, I would expect a large engined BMW to have higher running costs than a Subaru.

I'm not that keen on Imprezas but I would've thought a Legacy Spec B would cover all the areas you mention and have awd.
