I have run a Mazda 2 for years, absolutely bulletproof, all Fiesta running gear.

I would also suggest an older Swift, also pretty bomb proof.

Don't buy French, they break down after a few years.

Jazz? Yaris? Micra? 107/206/207? Corsa? Fiesta? Polo? Any ideas?

Looking for low running costs and a reputation for reliability. Also, preferably automatic.
Best at what and to do what?

Reality is. They are all much of a muchness. Low running costs will largely be down to how you calculate them and what you deem as a running cost.

There are good and bad examples of all cars.

I can vouch personally for the Swift automatic; my partner's had an 11 plate one for just over 3 years and its been totally bulletproof. Its a 1.5 so it's not economical or very fast but if all you're after is something solid, reliable and easy to drive there's nothing better in my opinion. Ours has got 82k mainly motorway miles on the clock (60k done in our ownership) and it's never put a foot wrong *touches wood*. I absolutely adore it; furthermore my car is a Skoda Fabia and I would wholeheartedly recommend one of them too; I've had 3 and they're superb cars for what you pay for them.
