So I've an MX5 (J2-Ltd so yellow with pop up lights) that rarely gets used as I've a dog, and it makes me drive like a loon (it's on some decent quality coil overs at a very low ride height with a jdm induction kit that all makes me drive it a little too enthusiastically when I am behind the wheel).

So what 4 seater convertible, that would allow the dog to come too, would be ideal for high days, holidays, weekends, the odd longer trip yet still ok for the odd 34 mile commute (round trip on country A roads). I'd like some performance, and some nice handling, although it doesn't have to be sports car sharp, but be enjoyable/have character. It would probably live out side, and I live on the Yorkshire coast....

Some thoughts were:

BMW E36 328 - (I had an estate version of this) - rust issues? A little long in the tooth?
BMW E46 325/330 Ci - rust issues? Image issues? Auto or manual?
Saab 9-3 turbo - mixed reviews on handling and perfomance, I prefer the looks of the earlier car that suffered bulk head issues.
Land Rover Series - performance/fuel/ride issues, I already have a TD5 Disco and a tractor, but I do like these, probably useless for going anywhere far.
Mercedes CLK 320/280 - probably more of a cruiser, what are they like to drive? W208 rust and the girlfriend isn't keen on the looks, W209 seems to have mixed reliability especially around the folding roof and may be less available in this price range.

So am I missing anything? And what experience do people have of the above?

Apologies mate, no..

You can look at the E46 though. I had an E46 M3 obviously worth more than £4k.

I gather an E46 330ci would still have the same kind of rust issues as my M3 did. But I reckon it would be a decent car..
