Starting to get a massive itch for a new car. Don't need one, and can't afford one, but really want one.

My position is that I'm contract, so paid on a daily basis. Reasonably secure - have a contract until December 2018. However, this could end at any time, and could also fail to be renewed. I have a small cash pile to insulate against this type of challenge, and figure it might be better used on a car. What I'm looking for is a fun car that can be fairly easily liquidated if needed - I can accept a level of depreciation, but trying to avoid massive. The thinking would be I would keep the car as long as I'm working, but if the void between contracts was too long, then I'd sell it. I don't mind losing £5K by having to sell it quickly, but would rather not lose £15K (figures are illustrative - I'm not a flagrant money waster, but would rather be driving a nice car than having money sitting in the bank and am prepared, but not keen, to deal with any negative consequences). Therefore there are three things to consider - running costs, depreciation and possible loss if needing to sell quickly - e.g. within 3 months.

The two cars I am considering at the moment are a 981 Porsche Boxster S, or a 4.7 Maserati GranCabrio - the Porsche is around £35K - £40K and the Maserati is around £44K. I know that the maths massively favour the Porsche, but everything else massively favours the Maserati.

I'm looking for cossetting, style and performance - possibly not in that exact order. Also definitely not looking for vulgar.

Any thoughts on the relative merits of these two choices, or any other suggestions?

For that money, I would buy a good 911 carrera 3.2 from the 80s. more fun than the 2 cars you mentioned, more reliable, more attractive and you'll make money when you sale it.
Sorry, I really struggle with modern machinery.

Have you thought about going a bit older with the Maserati?

Personally, I'd be looking to buy a car that's done the bulk of its depreciation, not one that's only part way down the depreciation curve.

Having said that, if you buy the "right" Porsche, it won't lose much, and may even appreciate over time. Not something you could say about a Maser Coupe.

PS: I'd still have a the Maserati. Ferrari-derived V8, anyone? Oh, go on then! biggrin

I forgot to mention - it has to be a car that I want.

For some reason that I can't explain a 911 leaves me stone cold. I just don't want one. Same goes for a TVR.

I like the Panamera and the Boxster, but don't want a Cayman. I'd love an Alfa 8C, but think they're too expensive. The 4C is affordable, but I'd really need the 4C Spider, which isn't. A Lancia Delta Integrale is very appealing, but I don't think it would be cossetting enough.

I can deal with an amount of depreciation, but it's definitely not a forever car so I need to consider re-sale - both from a price point of view and also a timing point of view. I fully realise that my car preferences are going to make the potential loss figure worse than it needs to be. I'm comfortable with that.

I get that you mean, you don´t want a car just for the sake of having a car you want a car you really want.
No one can help you with this, except you. Just make a list of all the cars you like in that price range and then decide on one.

But if I was you I´d test drive a Lancia Delta Integrale first... and if you buy one make it LHD so it appeals to a larger market, including me.
