used car to buy
Discussion
All depends on your usage profile, Alan.
- How many doors do you need? Will 2 be enough, or do you need 4?
- Do you need a big boot? If so, would that be a saloon, hatchback or estate? Or it might not matter.
- How many miles do you do?
- Do you do any long journeys (100+ miles)?
If you let us know what you need a car to do, we can help you find the right kind of vehicle.

With so little information the question is impossible to answer.
The big advantage of electric cars are the low fuel / tax and congestion charges. If you do many thousands of miles each year or regularly go into central London then an electric or hybrid might make sense. If you are only doing a few thousand then you will be paying a premium for something that is of little use to you.
£10k could buy you something quite interesting / fun / luxurious in the second hand market. As a rule, if you don't know a great deal about cars, go for a reliable model / brand with a low number of owners and a full service history with invoices to back up any service. The following should give you little trouble. Post anything you are looking at on PH and you will be amazed at how willing people are to help.
Here's a very subjective list for you.
Biggish, reliable and comfortable - Lexus - various models.
Small / sensible - VW Polo or Golf
Tiny - Something Japanese or Korean
Fun and willing to spend on maintenance - Porsche Boxster
Fun and not willing to spend on maintenance - Mazda MX5
Oddball - Lexus SC430
